How dead is dead when the maggots will not eat the flesh & how black is black when darkness shines bright. The Canadian primitive black metal band Akitsa conjures up the spells of the black witches with their 2010 release, Au crépuscule de l’espérance via Hospital Productions. Their music goes further than just being raw, it’s primal hate times a hundred. What’s totally awesome about this record is that with all of its’ blackened feedback & chaotic distortion, they still pose the power to create catchy grooves. Au crépuscule de l’espérance features vocals that are not mere vocals, but unholy screams meant to awaken the black spirits that went to the underworld before their time. This Montreal band has a dirty punk factor to their music that makes my head spin around. Plus, Akitsa songs have a slow creeping doomy dirge to them that only enhances the desolate atmosphere they create. Another thing that I find interesting about this album is that it has a lo-fi sound quality, but at the time sounds like an epic. If you want ten songs of raw black metal, this Akitsa album will infest your bleak soul.
