Where we came from and why we are here are two questions that have haunted human beings from the beginning of our time on this planet. As a species, we have spent millennia constructing myths and legends to give meaning to our existence on this planet, and to give hope for when we cease to exist. I harbour a hope that humans are once again returning to the idea that our origins are as much of this earth as are the rest of its creatures, after so many centuries of egocentric theistic cultural dominance, that the religious wars we’re experiencing are the death rattle of a more ignorant time. Austrian photographer KRIST MORT has just released a new book of her work entitled Tera via Cyclic Press, and the cycle of coming from the earth and returning to it figure highly in this collection of stunning images. Mort shows the human body in the abstract, caked with the vital soil that makes life possible, only to wither and decay back into it to give live to others. Tera portrays humanity as a part of something larger, a cycle that we must respect because it will feed us and break us either way. These images are compelling yet discomforting; they take away the individual power we have been taught, and imbue us with the universal power we have within us.
