The Blood Cult Of Putrefaction

The debut LP by Ireland’s Putrefaction is a heavy dose of dark metallic crusty riffs skewered together by visions of concentration camps, putrefied bodies, cities consumed by filth, corruption and disease. The opening track ‘Scourge’ leads us in, with distorted feedback slowly fading and declining into a heavy bass tone atmospheric riff. This as all fans of heavy music know is the revving up and things after this are going to go pretty fucking awry. Much like being handcuffed to a car that’s about to explode. There’s the riff change, a low-pitched roar and yes, balls to the fucking wall, things have gone very awry!

Putrefaction – ‘Drown Them In Their Wine’ track off their debut LP ‘Blood Cult’ out May 2012

Their firestorm spews bile and cerebral vitriol all over the systematic teachings in society. The blaze has a heavy almost tribalistic beat, filthy guitar riffs and finishes with great heavy bass runs.

I think Putrefaction and bands like Hellshock, His Hero is Gone etc, are part of that evolution that have brought crust punk out of the old days of cliched Discharge riffs to intelligent originality and decent production quality. Their vinyl LP ‘Blood Cult’ is going into pressing this week and being released by Distro-y Records, Underground Movement, Phobia Records and Ratbone Records. And all with added depth and dynamics otherwise known as mastering by Jack Control, who knows his heaviness having previously mastered Deviated Instinct, Guided Cradle, Martyrdöd etc.

The lyrics deal with the power of the Catholic Church in Irish schooling, hospitals and prisons, Treblinka Death camp, the concentration camps of the Bosnian war etc. I think music like this, needs lyrics like these as it gives it that extra slap on the back of the head. Just take a listen to the track ‘Drown Them In Their Wine’. ‘Blood Cult’ I’d say will be in a lot of folks favourite crust album of 2012.
