Apocalyptic Blues

Sovereign…
NEUROSIS
Review + More

Something different is blowing through my mind today. I ask myself, how do my actions shape my reality? Or how can how can sound heal my past scars of internal despair? I’m not sure if I will ever know the answers to all of the weird thoughts that pass through my mind on the daily. Although I do know when I listen to NEUROSIS that for some reason I feel like the dark places in my mind don’t seem as dark as they once were. It’s pretty fucking epic that one of my favorite bands has decided to re-issue their 2000 Sovereign EP via Neurot. From my point of view, NEUROSIS create more than just music, it’s almost like they have created a tribe that is unified by sound. I’m also fascinated with how their music has the power to transform my mental existence into unknown places of wonder. When I listen to Sovereign, it’s about soaring away on the giant drum beats on the song “Prayer” & feeling like I’m on the same level as the hawks gliding above the grand canyon. NEUROSIS also trip me out with the way they are able to to create music that’s made in the present day have this ancient feeling about it. Songs like “An Offering” have these lakes of audio dirge surrounded by trees that are made out of destiny. Their songs have an apocalyptic current that runs through them, but at the same time they also create clouds of hope that float above their thunderous bass lines. The vocal delivery on this EP is stealth & fragile at the same time, and while invoking fear in you, tries to take over your happy thoughts. The drums on “Flood” can wake up the sense of being in all of us; the call & response vibe that takes place on this tune is pure magic. At times, I feel like NEUROSIS’ music is way more metaphysical than it is given credit for. This is not only an EP, but a glance into the looking glass of the human condition that we all go through from moment to moment. If you are a NEUROSIS fan, you must check out this EP with an unreleased bonus track, “Misgiven,” plus the artwork has been reworked by Aaron Turner. Things may change at any given second, but NEUROSIS will remain rad for infinity!…Something special is taking place after the jump tune in!

Could not have said it better man. Neurosis is not just about music, they really are tribal leaders in the sonic landscape we know as heaviness and unfiltered emotion. They have paved the way for countless others to expand on their teachings.
