Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LXII
Curated by haarp

CVLT Nation is hyped to release Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LXII Curated by haarp today! Keith painted a vivid audio portrait of the sounds that have inspired him. This mixtape is a perfect example of why this series is so important to everyone involved in this webzine. Check out the stream below and download after the jump!

I’d like to thank CVLT NATION for asking me to compile a mixtape for their site. It was very fun to put together and eye opening in what I chose to include and why. I hope you enjoy these songs and find something new here. If you do, please dig into that band and explore.

Every track in this mix has inspired me in some way or another and shaped me into the musician I am today. From blazing speed to tripped out and weird to classic to pummeling, these songs are the soundtrack of my life.

-Keith Sierra Jr.

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. LXII Curated by haarp Track List:
I Want Me to Want You – Old Granddad (Hocus Corpus)
Great starter song, it always makes me smile when this track kicks off. 4 count into a heavy, fun, rockin’ riff. I love the vocal mix of clean and heavy singing.

I See Red – brutal truth (need to control)
With this album, brutal truth hammered home a very important point to me – bend genres! The use of effects, strange riffs (for a grind album), and spastic drumming made this a very atypical grind album.

Alleged – Unsane (Scattered, Smothered & Covered)
This is the soundtrack of me going out on the weekends with Shaun. Heading out in his truck, up to no good, ready for a night soaked with Guinness and fun. I’m happy to have these memories and glad those days are gone. Powerful, straight forward noise rock from the masters.

Ninth Circle – Malformed Earthborn (Defiance of the Ugly by the Merely Repulsive)
Dirty, heavy industrial. I love the bass lines and that filthy guitar theme.

Burnout! – Stapled Shut/The Flesh – Crom/Dirt the Purity – Spazz/Unmoved/Complacent – Stapled Shut – Left Back/Let Down Double 7” Compilation
Listing to these songs takes me back to sitting in my room with my record player and discovering new music. Great times, great bands.

On All Fours – GOD (The Anatomy of Addiction)
What an album. Heavy and haunting. The drum/percussion work of Lou Ciccotelli and Scott Kiehl drives this song forward in such a crisp, unique way and makes great use of the open space the strings section gives them.

Bug Vomit – Admiral Angry (Buster)
Excellent minimalistic guitar work and a singer who sounds like he is coming to hurt you.

Nothingface – Voivod (Nothingface)
Voivod represent me going back and giving something I didn’t like at first another chance. I first heard this when I was in a pure metal phase and I am glad I decided to give it another listen.

Disorganization – Zeni Geva (Freedom Bondage)
This album reminds me of listening to the suggestions of older musicians with a taste for more than just metal – Brian Patton + Tower Records in New Orleans = Expand your musical mind.

Friendship – Weekend Nachos (Worthless)
A new take on an old style that makes me feel young again!

Ride the Snake – -16- (Blaze of Incompetence)
Irate, I hate, I can’t relate! If you don’t like -16- there’s not much I can do for you. This band has been on every mixtape I have made since I heard them.

Have a Drink on Me – AC/DC (Back in Black)
In my world of crazy and fast heavy metal my friend Chad would always put this album on at the right time. AC/DC, Phil Rudd, and Chad would always remind me that simplicity and the pocket are just as important as going crazy at 5354373839437 BPMs. I wish I could buy them all a drink to thank them.

I’d Rather Be Sleeping – D.R.I. (Dealing With It)
D.R.I., skateboards, and friends.

Nuclear Exorcist – Deceased (13 Frightened Souls)
I love King Fowley’s drumming style – twisting, turning, non repetitive. Deceased have always sounded fresh to me while maintaining a classic metal sound. Hard to do and they pull it off well. Also, that sinister laugh just past halfway of this song? The BEST laugh in a metal song ever. Up the tombstones!

United Snakes – Nightstick (Ultimatum)
Underrated masters of psychedelic noise rock. Nightstick melt my mind. The main guitar riff should drive me crazy but over that fuzzed out, heavy rhythm section it just works.

Practice What You Preach – Napalm Death (From Enslavement to Obliteration)
When I put this cassette on the first time my draw dropped and music was changed forever. Instantly a favorite, the attitude and breakneck speed of Napalm Death became a huge influence on me.

Get Fucked Again – Milligram (This Is Class War)
In my head, this song represents how we can express anger and rage in a positive way through music. Get fucked again? Who hasn’t?

Blackness Within – Autopsy (Acts of the Unspeakable)
Autopsy is fucking sick. Period.

Xnoybis – Godflesh (Selfless)
Heavy and uplifting at the same time. Godflesh can create many moods and on this song they make me headbang with a smile on my face.

Cataract – Dawnbringer (Nucleus)
Cataract has so much feeling. From the intro to the leads, the pacing to the lyrics, Dawnbringer shows how to craft a self contained tragic little world within a song. It’s like getting lost in someone’s sadness for a few minutes…

Carrion Fairy – Pig Destroyer (Terrifyer)
Try not to thrash and break something when this song comes on. I dare you.

Stress Related – Righteous Pigs (Stress Related)
The relationship between Mitch Harris’ guitars and Alan Strong’s drums on this album has never quite been matched in my opinion. Forward moving without being traditional, Strong’s beats, rolls, and snare placements are a perfect complement to the strange guitar riffs and timing. Old Joe Caper’s got a hell of a voice too.

What Happens Now? – Porcupine Tree (Nil Recurring)
Porcupine Tree is an excellent band. The musicianship and composition are top notch. Heavy without being “heavy.”I love the melancholy vocals and the way they pack so much emotion into their songs. The ending section of this song is dizzying and wonderful.

Nothing to Lose – Today Is The Day (Willpower)
An excellent example of TITD’s philosophy of writing, playing, and sounding how they want and fuck the haters. I’ve heard people say the beginning section is too soft, the clean vocals are not quite right, the heavy vocals are too distorted, it’s too noisy, and on and on. Don’t like it? I’ll bet Steve Austin could care less.

Turning Piss Into Gold – Unearthly Trance (In the Red)
Powerful, no frills occult doom. This song makes me feel like I am suffocating while a crazed man is screaming at me from the bottom of the pit I am falling into. And that’s a good thing.

Roadbull – Melvins (Stoner Witch)
This song is triumphant. Crover is power. Unconventional in its approach, the ending of this song falls apart as this mixtape marches into the sunset………
