Sonic Cathedrals
Vol CXXVI by OWLFOOD

Today CVLT Nation is bringing you another mixtape for your mind…Sonic Cathedrals Vol CXXVI by OWLFOOD! Check out this mix of eclectic tunes below and enjoy!

This can be a difficult process. Picking sounds that mean the most to you and the music you create. Turns out it was illuminating and enjoyable.

Huge thanks to Sean and CVLT NATION for all the support and asking for us to make this mix tape.

Owlfood as a project is most satisfying because of our individual eclectic taste as music fans. We’ve been friends forever and we innately understand how each others’ tastes filters its way into our music. This mix tape is an example of what we might listen to on a more constant basis, essentially guitar based music. But our listening definitely enters the realms of jazz, electronic music, minimalism, noise, field recordings… it’s a constant adapting sound, vibrating forever and ever and ever…

Sonic Cathedrals Vol CXXVI OWLFOOD Track List:

Neil Young Dead Man soundtrack – Space, Saturation, Time, Melody, Tone. The ultimate.

Flying Canyon – The Bull Who Knew the Ring – SF doom folk. Heavy song. Heavy story. Look them up.

Barn Owl – Into the Red Horizon – Off the Conjurer EP. I saw them on tour around this time. Two guitars at very loud volume locked in with overtones and vibrations simulating pure human ecstasy. I pity those who never experience such joy in life.

Nico – Frozen Warnings – Very few can touch a nerve through such simple means. Voice and Harmonium. Her life story only adds more to the melancholy. Inspiring beauty.

Lungfish – You Are The War – The only band that matters. Live, a force of nature, recordings bring continuous joy and revelation. I hope one day they resume their illustrious path.

Abilene – FItch – “Two Guns, Twin Arrows” is a criminally overlooked record. Alex Dunham was in Hoover, Regulator Watts and others. His guitar playing has such amazing feel. Gentle touch when needed but he can dig and wail when the song calls for it.

Swans – Eden Prison, chugging along, claustrophobic emotions, black smoke, led to destruction by Mr. Michael Gira

The Stooges – Dirt – Bass line of all bass lines, Iggy’s ramble in and out of the fire. I love when they travelled this more psychedelic path.

Alaric – Weep – Really amazing Death punk. Atmosphere for days, driving drums, brilliant vocals. I feel as if I could have found this on a cassette tape in one of my weirdo friends’ car circa 86′ and I would have loved it So original.

DrCarlsonAlbion – Reynardine (Traditional) – More guitar mastery from Earth’s founding member Dylan Carlson, this track has the addition of vocals. FEMALE vocals no doubt. Culminating in absolute sorcery. Maybe its the use of tremolo, but this one leaves me aching after every listen.

Cabaret Voltaire – Fourth Shot – I wanna go back in time and see this live in a warehouse in Sheffield, UK. dark, surreal, unnatural, steel and concrete.

Rites of Spring – Nudes – ROS are of my favorite bands of all time for too many reasons to get into here. They seemed to still soar above those from this time. They represent a feeling I’ll never feel again with another band. Its not nostalgia but the discovery of a pure moment unconcerned with anything but being alive, at that moment.

Young Widows – The Muted Man – Never really got into the early material, but this record is pretty flawless. Semi-abstract rock guitar song writing, great recording and vocals effects and atmosphere, I listen to this record a lot.

Jerk with a bomb – Raging Bulls – Weird name for a band. The dude from Black Mountain. He can write the fuck out of some songs. This is one of my favorites.

Iceage – Burning Hand – Punk isn’t dead not by a long shot, it might just be a young man’s game.

Wire – Mercy – Angular, brooding, and the beginning of something new in the splintering of punk

The Conet Project – Mystery, numbers, and shortwave radio

Human Bell – Trail of Tears, First track of Nathan’s I’ve ever heard its off a self-released CDR -blissed out psych banjo and baritone guitar.

Chrome – Read Only Memory – In the early 90’s I was bored and would go to Goth Night at a local dance club. I met a girl who was also the bartender. She turned me on to tons things. We would listen to records in her tiny apartment without any furniture. Through her I discovered Chrome.

Angels of Light -Kosinski – Michael Gira’s second appearance in this mix, but his mesmerizing voice and the song’s repetitious ability to revel more and more light until I’m blinded in its glory is just perfect.

Talk Talk – Runeii – I obsessed over this record in the 2000 after I read a Tape Op interview with the engineer Tim Brown. Apparently they recorded weeks on end with oil lamp projections playing same riff over and over and obsessing over microphones. They once changed the direction of the oil lamps and everyone felt like they had gone insane. I’m a nerd for recording myths and this one has many. Great textures, amazing record in its proper context.

Grouper – Follow In Our Dreams – Drenched in reverb and buried guitar. Voyeuristic sounds that reach the surface, between two abandoned buildings.

Canyon – Yellow tape – Heavy as fuck. Not in volume or riffs, but in convincing emotions. Listen to the lyrics. Melancholy at its finest. I listened to this song on repeat one summer. “One night death he came knocking, I let him in, he’s an old friend of a friend”

Zomes – Openings – The mind of Asa Osbourne must share similar matter with mine. Voices of the divine – His guitar and song writing in Lungfish, Pupils, have left permanent marks, his visual art, and solo project Zomes are equally inspiring.

Time-Ship of the Demogorgon – Daniel (Arcus Incus Ululat) Higgs, Interdimensional Song-Seamstress – Do not read my words. Listen.

Neil Young – Dead Man Soundtrack – Closing of the eye.
