The other day, we received a strange-looking cassette tape in the mail from Nottingham, England, from a band called GUILTY PARENTS. I didn’t think much of it until I put on the tape, Slime Wave, and had my wig pushed way fucking back. This music is that weird garage rock, spray painted with hardcore and sprinkled with a bit of demented cyco pop. GUILTY PARENTS are a special band that totally exist in their own planet of “be yourself, make music and fuck what anyone else thinks.” By the third song on Slime Wave, I said to myself, these aliens are creating some sonic magic, and I better make sure to tell the CVLT Nation readers about them, so here we are. When you hear “Gush,” you will feel a rush like a pill starting to take effect, but the party really gets started when those off the hook drums come in, with the feedback distortion bouncing off of the rhythm. That’s the thing about GUILTY PARENTS’ songs – all of the music is one giant hook that will take you on a gnarly, blissed-out trip. The production on this EP is smart; I dig the way that they bury the vocals under bricks of chaotic dirge. Their tune “Special Formula” gives you an audio portrait of this band – crazed garage rock angst-filled melodies stabbing what we consider normal in the face! GUILTY PARENTS also have the sleaze factor, which only adds to their voodoo-tinged soundscape. When your ears bite into their song “Sink Your Talons” you will get where I’m coming from. Just when I thought I had them figured out, GUILTY PARENTS close out Slime Wave with a slowed down, psyched-out waterfall of feedback called “Night Birds.” This band has found a way to write songs that represent their influences, but they are able to execute them in a very original way. Do I want to hear more from this band – hell motherfucking yes, and all that I ask of them is to keep it dirty!…Download EP HERE!
