The first time I met Mark Gonzales, he was fucking bothering me on my way into an Olympic gig in 1984. He kept asking me if I wanted to see him do a trick, finally I said yes, and he did a hand plant which melted my brain on the spot! I kept asking him to do it again after that. This continued the next day when I saw Mark at the Federal building in Westwood – we were both there to watch Black Flag rip shit. I knew the first time I saw him skate that he was special, but I didn’t know he would become a living legend. What makes The Gonz different than most is that he is a true artist on the board. He sees the universe from a different direction than most of us and it shows in the way he skates. I have been lucky enough to get to know Mark over the years and he reminds me of a skateboarding Miles Davis. I know for a fact that this dude does not do what he does for money, for him it’s all about the art!
