1. LVTHN – Split Leviathan/Kratzer/Rha./Paan
LVTHN (Or Leviathan) are a d-beat crust/screamo/hardcore band from Rome and we have talked about their amazing music before on this site. This time the band has returned with two songs that went into a three-way split, and holy mother of fuck, where will these guys end up?! These two new songs show with unmistakable incumbency how fucking amazing this band is. In the realm of screamo-leaning hardcore crust, nothing this year has reached the peaks of these two tracks. If you like shit like Alpinist, Jungbluth, Svffer, Planks, Lentic Waters, Centuries etc, then you will fucking love LVTHN.
2. OTHISMOS – L’Odio Necessario
Othismos play Motörhead-influenced crust punk in the Italian tradition, with lyrics and vocals in Italian. Their sound can be traced back to the origins of Italian hardcore (Wretched, Negazione, Church of Violence, Nerorgasmo), but there are many more metal elements in this ancestral sounding hardcore punk, and you can clearly trace the influences of the band back to bands like Darkthrone, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Hellhammer, Amebix, Antisect and so on. Over all Othisomos sound classic and fifthly as fuck and L’Odio Necessario is one of the best Italian retro-punk/metal albums of the year!
3. HALLELUJAH! – Hallelujah!
Silly name, but not so silly business. Hallelujah! from Trento, northern Italy, will fuck you up. Take Cult Ritual, Raw Nerve, and all that insane noise punk movement and inject some real rock ‘n roll akin to Motörhead, some Crass and some Minot Threat in it, and you will not be too far from what Hallelujah! are all about: abrasive, skin-peeling, livid and irritating as fuck raw noise hardcore punk with rock ‘n roll and noise rock elements, no to miss!
4. LEFT IN RUINS – Ghost
Solid and classic fucking zero-bullshit d-beat hardcore punk from this hardcore horde from Trento, northern Italy. Left In Ruins play bruising d-beat hardcore in the vein of Totalitar, Discharge, Anti Cimex, Mob 47, Void, Crucifix, and Driller Killer. This is punk rock that will fuck you up as it comes to you like a bag of bricks being flung at your face. Since the demise of Holy, this is some of the best shit in the genre to come out of Italy.
5. ZEIT – The World Is Nothing
Zeit hail from Venice, and play modern and cutting metallic hardcore punk in the vein of Converge, early Cave In, Centuries and Cursed. Their very personal brand of hardcore has one foot in d-beat and more raw and straightforward hardcore punk, and the other foot almost stepping into mathcore, post-hardcore or metalcore. Either way, the band has a penchant for playing angular and frenetic riffs that convey a sense of chaos and despair, but they also have a keen sense of melody that keeps things always wonderfully balanced, driving and never too contrived or overly hermetic, while also taking care in beating the shit out of the listener with a raw and unforgiving hardcore onslaught.
