Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was an American icon who paved the way for the many weirdos that followed him. Without even knowing it, he created a subculture that would influence generations to come. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was the king of the macabre stage show way before Alice Cooper. In 1956, he put a spell on rock & roll with the release of his single “I Put a Spell on You.” The 2001 documentary Screamin’ Jay Hawkins: “I Put a Spell on You” takes a look hard look at the life of this very original performer. This documentary is full of interesting commentary from Jim Jarmusch, Bo Diddley and Eric Burdon, plus Screamin’ Jay himself. I’m going on record to say that a part of his legacy influenced The Misfits, The Cramps, The Birthday Party, The Cure, Black Sabbath and many more bands of the same ilk. So now check out the documentary Screamin’ Jay Hawkins: “I Put a Spell on You” after the jump!
