Glyn Smyth creates truly beautiful and timeless artwork. He has produced classic vinyl and CD layouts for bands like Subrosa, Cough, Unearthly Trance and Rot in Hell among others. Going through his site and trying to choose what to pull for this post was excruciating – I found myself pulling everything, so I just had to stop and decide on a few choice images. Luckily, CVLT Nation will be featuring an interview with Glyn sometime in the next couple of weeks, and we are super stoked! Glyn’s artwork has an element of femininity to it that is often missing in metal/crust art, but when you think about the cycles of birth, destruction and rebirth that happen in every woman’s body, the feminine makes perfect sense with many of the themes of metal artwork. He also cites folklore and magick as major sources of inspiration, which again correspond to belief in the Goddess and feminine nature. Moreover, his heavy use of symbolism speaks to ancient beliefs and traditions. To me, his artwork also shows a respect for the psychedelic Fillmore era of art and music; especially his poster prints. I really appreciate how he limits his use of color, but chooses colors that complement each other so beautifully that they create an impression of being more colorful than they actually are. As someone who dabbles in graphic design and silkscreening, I know what a skill this is! The vinyl and CD covers and inserts he creates make each release a true collectible.
