REVIEW: RENOUNCER – INCORPOREAL INSURRECTION

RENOUNCER is a fairly new band from Kansas City, with members of Kicked In and Diskreet, and they play Hardcore just the way I like it: It’s hard as nails without being dull, it varies speeds so it stays interesting, it’s metallic without being metalcore, the musicians are skilled without jerking off about it and they stick to a dark and hateful theme that is the golden thread that runs through the four songs of this EP (entitled Incorporeal Insurrection, released on Disgorge Media).

Listen to three of those songs (recommendation: track 2), full review after the jump!

Enriching their harsh and heavy Hardcore with just the right dose of extreme metal, RENOUNCER position themselves somewhere among bands like Catharsis, Kickback or Bloodlet. Super sick and highbrow riffs case the utter brutality of the songs, so you’ll find yourself caught between being amazed and the urge to punch the guy next to you and/or yourself in the face. And like I said, RENOUNCER are able to incorporate this metallic heaviness without sounding like some stupid deathcore crap or a narcissistic mathcore band whose only raison d’être is showing how much they’ve practiced to play scales fore- and backwards.

The vocals are brutal and heavy and fit the whole thing just perfect. I just don’t get the point of watering them down with this distortion effect kind of thing, they’d sound better without that. I mean it’s not really annoying, since this is just a four song EP – but on a full length it would be pretty disturbing I guess. On the other hand I really dig the lyrics, e.g. “God Is Not Here My Child / His Ears Deaf To Your Cries / Only I The Devil Remain / Destroyer Of His Holy Lies”. I’m so easy to get with lines like that.

Incorporeal Insurrection is a relentless, mean and heavy Hardcore record that brought me through a bunch of shitty Monday mornings (oh I hate them) and should definitely please fans of bands like Kickback, Bloodlet or even early Converge. I’m really curious about the further development of this band.
