Punk is Dead Fest Mixtape For CVLT Nation

The Punk is Dead Fest is happening on August 30th & 31st in Lancaster, CA! Ticket info here and flyer below! Now enjoy the PIDF mixtape exclusively for CVLT Nation!

The original idea behind Punk Is Dead was to create a powerviolence fest in the vein of Super Sabado Gigante and Fiesta Grande for the new century. But from the seed of a powerviolence/grind fest it grew into a true heavy music festival featuring bands from every subgenre and scene. It includes some of the best up-and-coming local talent, established touring acts, even a couple international bands. From hardcore to crust to doom to death metal, all bases are covered.

This mixtape reflects such diversity. On this mixtape you will find a sampling of what you will find both days of Punk Is Dead. The unrelenting speed of Godstomper and ACxDC, the heady experimentalism
of Vestiges, the oppressively bleak blackened doom of Primitive Man, and the fearless brutality of Skinfather.

Each song offers up something unique, so your ears will never find themselves bored. Feel free to download and enjoy and if you like what you hear, come out to Lancaster on Labor Day weekend and experience it live.

1. VICE-Since Birth
What sort of heavy music festival would Punk Is Dead be without a NYHC band? Hailing from Staten Island, VICE, with Since Birth display their talent for traditional NY thrash but with a powerviolence twist. Since Birth will be featured on their upcoming LP to be released on Eulogy Recordings.

2. Bone Dance-White Guilt
With the untimely demise of Gaza, Bone Dance is one of the few bands to continue carrying the mathcore torch. Technical but also aggressive, Bone Dance features one of the most expressive vocalists in hardcore today. Absolutely seething with rage, he spits out his lyrics with such venom that you almost believe he’s going to burst out of the speakers and strangle you with his mic cord.

3. Skin Like Iron-Dim Horizon
Sure you can call Skin Like Iron a crust band, but you would be remiss to neglect the other
diverse influences you can pick out in their sound. From crust to d-beat to progressive
hardcore,SLI add an emotional layer to their music that keeps things from getting
stale.

4. Godstomper-Tear Gas Victory
An unreleased track from the legendary powerviolence band. If you are a drum & bass powerviolence band then chances are you are ripping something off from Godstomper. The direct link between the first wave powerviolence bands of yesteryear and the new wave of neoviolence, Godstomper have been going strong for 20+ years now and show no signs of slowing up.

5. Barking Backwards-Brown Dick
An up-and-coming powerviolence band from So Cal, Barking Backwards are not just another garage band, which is evident by their meteoric rise from playing garages to playing support for Infest’s reunion show. Though you can still find them playing a raging backyard show.

6. Plagues-Dull Fangs Against the Concrete
Off of their new EP Perfect State released on Glory Kid Ltd., Dull Fangs Against the Concrete perfectly encapsulates Plagues’s progression from a fast hardcore band to an even heavier metallic hardcore band while still retaining their original powerviolent element.

7. Primitive Man-Antietam
Recently signed to Relapse Records, Primitive Man is more than just a side project of doomgrind band Clinging To The Trees of a Forest Fire. Words cannot describe just how heavy PM can get. Topping everything off are the vocals of Ethan McCarthy; absolutely disgusting, it’s a wonder he can even speak after a live show.

8. AxRxM-Cowboy Suicide
Spazzy and experimental, AxRxM have earned their place among the elites of powerviolence through releases on 625 Thrashcore, To Live A Lie, and ten years of steady playing shows. And while they may not play out as often as they’d like due to their singer teaching english in China, they still find time to squeeze in a handful of shows every summer. Cowboy Suicide is off their last release,2010’s S/T LP.

9. Vestiges-VIII
Another song in their ongoing narrative about Man, Nature and his ultimate impending doom, VIII is an absolute beast of an epic at just over 13 minutes long. But despite its length, VIII never drags and is ultimately rewarding.

10. Malpractice Insurance-Incompetent Negligent Unethical
Yeah Malpractice Insurance are a medically-themed grind band but they are far from a gimmick. They make aggressive technical grindcore with a DIY punk edge. Incompetent Negligent Unethical is off of their latest split with Spanish grindcore band Nashgul. Released on To Live A Lie Records.

11.Jungle Juice-Infect
Jungle Juice are based out of Louisiana and this is reflected in the swampy sludgecore they traffic in. Switching between creepingly slow sludge and the speed of fast hardcore, Jungle Juice continue to evolve with each successive release.

12. Traitor-The Weight of Hope
There has been a surplus of blackened hardcore bands as of late but Traitor manage to add something new to the mix. With tempos often picking it up to grindcore speeds, the vocalist alternates between harsh hardcore barks to ungodly black metal demon shrieks. Bracing to say the least.

13. Skinfather-Succession
Not just another thrash metal band, Skinfather are equal parts Entombed as they are Slayer. Incorporating old school Swedish death metal into their thrash metal roots, Skinfather don’t have to wear denim vests and snapbacks to get their point across.

14. Sky Burial-From Out of Obscured Light
Sky Burial make doomy yet eerily beautiful post-metal that will transport you to another time and place. A time and place when man wasn’t so intent on shitting all over Planet Earth. Much like many of their label-mates on Replenish Records, Sky Burial explores the often times antagonistic relationship between Man and Nature.

15.ACxDC-Eye in the Sky
The most polarizing band in powerviolence, ACxDC have, seemingly overnight, become a magnet for hate from internet trolls. But whether you love them or hate them you cannot deny the manic energy they are able to pack into every single one of their sub-1 minute songs. Case in point: Eye in the Sky, off their 3-way split with fellow grinders Magnum Force and Sex Prisoner. Released earlier this year on the always stellar To Live A Lie Records, this record is sure to end up on plenty of people’s year end best of lists.

16. Final Draft-The Years
Inglewood, always up to no good! Final Draft separate themselves from your run of the mill grindviolence band with just their all consuming hate for everything fucked up around them. The rage is thick and palpable on everything they record but never more so than on their 2012 LP “West World Order”.

17. Bio Crisis-Urbe Violenta
Hailing from the infamously gritty city of Tijuana, Bio Crisis’s tough urban roots is certainly reflected in their music. Fast crusty hardcore with intelligent socio-political lyrics and a polished ear for melodicism, Bio Crisis have already begun making waves in the crust/hardcore scene and you can bet on them having a bright future.
