How much chaos can you fit in eight and a half minutes? Well, according to Obliterations’s debut EP, a fair fucking bit. The four songs found here are anthems of mayhem and disorder, wrapped in an inexplicable amount of anger and raw energy. The clue is that even though the general vibe of the album is quite punkish, there is still a great amount of heavy metal influence. In other words Obliterations do not only worship Black Flag, but Black Sabbath as well.
The guitar work is a testament on the influence that Black Sabbath had on the band’s sound. The main riff of “Kick Against the Pricks” is addictive, while the energy of the music is contagious, and it even features a face melting solo near the end. The feedback intro to “Deaf, Dumb & Blind Faith” soon transforms to a devastating path of destruction with the vocals howling relentlessly.
The whistling start of “Wage Slaves” soon takes over, with just the bass and the drums leading the track until the guitars kick in with a solo and then start unleashing the intoxicating riffs that the band finds so easy to come up with, while the yelling vocals still accompany you through this trip. Finally “Twisted & Pissed” comes in with its in-your-face attitude, with the deeper growls used on the background adding further aggression to the track and the whole vibe provoking you to start a mosh pit.
The sound of the EP might be retro but Obliterations have definitely shown their teeth with this release. Now we just need to wait for a full-length simply because eight and a half minutes are not enough.
