Message In a Bottle

Mæt (full)

Mæt (full) is a photographic series by Per Johansen that explores our relationship with food and its consumption. Growing up in North America, I have plenty of experience with the idea of being “full” or “stuffed” with food, as well as the ubiquitous presence of plastic. I remember my first Trader Joe’s shopping experience – it was the first time I had seen so many food items wrapped in plastic, pre-packaged for my consumption. It’s ironic to think that we buy our food stuffed into plastic containers and then discard those empty containers, only to have them sit in our oceans trapping and “preserving” other lives. The other think I think about when looking at Johansen’s photos is the amount of petrochemicals I have consumed in my lifetime – so many that my body probably has a plastic element to it. I am one of those containers; and I would rather be the one brimming with lettuce than the one with sausage sitting undigested in it.
