Lithotome S/T Debut Review

Lithotome was formed in 2010 by Esoterica (ex Chaos Moon/ Krieg/ Esoterica). Shortly after, Imperial (Krieg/Twilight) was brought into the mix, adding his beast-like vocals to the audio assault. March 10th of this year marks the birth of one of the most disgusting records to pass through human eardrums, Lithotome’s self-titled debut. To say this record is mean would be a gross understatement.

The album opens with spacey ambience.  Dark, eerie, and menacing the sounds slowly pull in the listener, only to vomit them out in a vat of pure hell. This monstrous album is gritty as fuck. Sounds of space machines, blast beats, raging guitars all work together to create a black pit of war in the ear of the listener. And I’ll be honest… I don’t really have any idea what a black pit of war means, but I know that’s what I felt. This album is intense and hard to describe at length as a whole. It’s extremely unsettling and disturbing for most of it– much of that is the result of the unearthly, demon-like, vocals of Imperial.

Lithotome starts out strong and ends in fury. The last two tracks are the highlight of listening for me. I spend most of my time listening to real meditative droned out shit, so I was hoping that Lithotome would slow down a little bit. A Halo’s  Swarm of Locusts did just that, allowing me to catch my breath, after the preceding three songs beat me up mercilessly.

That breather only lasts eight minutes of course, and seconds later Mother of Worms, the last song of the album, explodes into audio existence. Bringing the album to a close, and leaving the listener with the chilling realization that the end is not just nigh, the end is fucking here.

I can’t say I enjoyed this album, solely because it is not an album to enjoy. It’s an album to get mad to, and then afterwards spend the rest of the day grimacing. So, if you’re into that sort of thing, this is definitely the release for you. Don’t sleep on it. If you haven’t already, listen to Lithotome’s debut today!
