IN THE FOREST OF SCREAMS

I feel really late for finally discovering Elu Of The Nine’s brilliant self titled EP, but seeing how it was more or less cremated and then buried at the bottom of the Crater Lake I can’t really blame myself. Elu Of The Nine are an incredibly secretive band and have played virtually no shows, nor do they ever release information about themselves, probably because they’re all fallen angels. This album is what I would imagine to be playing as you trudge to your hanging tree in the Aokigahara Forest, almost content with the fact that your whole entire aim in life was suicide. The album is an hour and nine minutes of the most terrifyingly blackened drone imaginable. The songs barely separate which is actually refreshing, if such a hopeful word can be applied to such corruptive music.  The most fascinating feature I felt was the way they incorporate screams as an additional instrument; at first I didn’t even realize it was a human voice, I firmly believed it was the sound of my own soul shrieking in my ear, but as I traveled further and further into the tombs of the Elu I realized that behind the wall of drone was an even more terrifying wave of pain and anguish. I hope Elu Of The Nine continue to release but something tells me they all drank copious amounts of cyanide shortly after releasing this EP, although that probably only moderately slowed them down.
