II…OAK Review + More

I want to catch a ride on a mammoth wave of decaying doom & I do not want it to end until I’m in the graveyard watching the ghosts of feedback unloading their gear of death. What band do they have in store for us tonite…the word on the street is that it is the almighty OAK from Baltimore. Their 2010 release, OAK II, via A389 Records , is a killer testament to epic doom. I’ve got to say, what gets me going about these humans is how they bring something new to this genre without seeming like they are trying to hard. OAK creates desolate places with blackened feedback & burnt out drone, where nothing can grow, only despair and sorrow. When I find myself in this land of bleakness, I begin to feel like I can think clearly, & my inner demons don’t trouble me as much, all because of this band of doom warlocks. They also know how to take one riff & stretch the fuck out of it, but within this one riff will be at least ten more damaged tones that will totally fuck with your mind. There is so much space in their songs that you might find your self floating off into another universe. The second song on this album, “Cowards & Undeserving ii,” starts off with a foreign language that will have you transfixed, then the song transforms into a slow moving melodic beast. The band plays death tones that could bring tears to statues; every time I hear this song, I mourn for the living. OAK’s vocals are an instrument unto themselves & they sound like oozing pus coming out of an infected sore, and it’s music to my twisted ears. This band is a perfect example of doom created from an honest place. It will resonate within tombstones all around the world.
