From Within…TREE of SORES Review

Ahh shit, I have the sound of Apocalyptic Blues swimming all in my brain space…what is the cause of the sonic spell that I find myself under? It’s the Leeds trio Tree Of Sores, & their self-titled album, released via Witch Hunter records, seeping into my humanity. This album bends time & space to create it’s own awesome reality. Tree Of Sores atmospheric doom-laden rituals almost have a dub quality to them. Why do I use the word blues to describe what this band manifests? Because they do sing about the plight of the human condition, & from my point of view I hear a texture of pain in the vocal delivery (which is at the heart of blues) from this band. Do not get me wrong, I would say that Tree Of Sores are kindred spirits to Neurosis & only distant cousins to Howling Wolf. In a very organic way, this band has expanded the crust & injected it with their own ethereal vision of the genre. On a personal level, when I hear this album it reminds of a trip I took to Glastonbury, the home to Merlin the wizard; when you are on this land, you get a strange sensation of mysticism. The same feeling takes over over my inner core when I listen to this album. Musically, this band melts sound & paints over it in different colors of emotion. Tree Of Sores’ music is vast & open, leaving you with room to dream about the beauty in darkness. Songs like “Sanford” have a killer, driving, almost tribal drum beat that engages you from the first moment you hear it. The guitar lick gets all up in your psyche to awaken your sleeping ghost. With all the weight on this record, this band never loses melody. Tree Of Sores are a pretty giving bunch, their album is up for download HERE. After the jump, check out some gnarly flicks!
