Fuck the Facts / Godstopper – Bovine Sex Club – Toronto

Anthony Abbatangelo, Toronto

For the first time in years, Toronto was treated to a performance by the legendary Fuck the Facts. Hailing from Ottawa, these guys are practically Canadian metal veterans, having spent more than 12 years terrorizing audiences with their evil brew of grindcore, death and sludge. Their shows are notoriously intense and jarringly brief – typically a 35 minute blast that leaves the crowd dazed, exhausted and screaming for more – and fans who packed tight into the Bovine Sex Club found this night to be no exception. Material from their new EP Amer was heavily featured, a release that perfectly casts melodic passages against the usual grindy insanity.

Opening was Toronto’s Godstopper. They play a distinct blend of bruising sludge-metal and discordant noise-rock, resulting in the obligatory comparisons to grunge. But these guys are far better than what any retro-act comparisons might imply. Gigging constantly on the strength of their debut LP and killer live show, this band is starting to get some much-deserved attention. The great strength of this outfit is their perfectly sculpted live sound, imparting some monstrous guitar and bass tones as well as crystal-clear dynamics unto the audience.
