Doom

ENTH+AMAROK
SPLIT LP

Polish funeral doom entity ENTH oppress on their side of this Orca Wolf Records/Halo of Flies Records released split. “Caverns of Advices” proceeds with a dominating aura of sweet heaviness, the repetitive beats pounding to the caress of a distraught master. Disparate and wrought with a heady breath of gloom, this eighteen minute behemoth of a track fractures the filth-laden atmosphere with gut-wrenching vocals dredged from the very pits of the deepest hell. Unnervingly calm in places, ENTH whisper with an unsettling melody introducing lightly struck keys and gentle passages of acoustic guitar in between colossal walls of despair. Shattering these moments of peace with snarls and kicks of true sorrow ENTH peel away layers of grime with blisteringly grave progressions of funereal pace. The final minutes of “Caverns of Advices” slide into a sublimely despondent string-fuelled misery, the tranquility belying the natural desolation contained within.

Amarok’s side of the split is track “IV – Survival” a direct follow on from their full length debut of 2010 (which featured I, II and III). Initially a little more minimalist than the ENTH side, the deep-seated despondence shines through the tender crashes of symbol and hard edged and fuzzy bass lines. Supremely harsh vocals ring out before giving way to deeper husks of obscurity and the darkness consumes with shadows and sinister screeches of wild abandon. An oppressive buzz hides behind the cruelly shrieked vocals, the intensely heavy bass weighing the track down with a delightfully malicious burden. Introducing a more traditional doom sound to the instrumentation in the latter stages of “IV – Survival,” Amarok show their roots in searing guitar solos whilst bringing a more horrific tone with those spiteful vocal lines. It’s disgusting. And it’s glorious.
