Earth Liberation Front

I was bred in the northern parts of Canada, and know the secrets of nature and have shared a close reverence for the ferality of it’s inhabitants and archaic landscape for an extremely long time. I was pleased to know as i matured there were others with the same thoughts and ideology about such things. I have copious amounts of time procuring the secret lore about the forest, animals, etc. It has offered me some transcendental visions of what i believe is the only truth. The inherit source of from which we all came and shall return, and one should respect this. Anyways, in contrast i’ve also accumulated a lot of hatred for the ones who think it is their purpose to destroy these things for mankind’s “improvement”. Their ignorance is accepted and for the most part we are limitless in the way we choose to act upon it. I discovered a documentary film entitled If A Tree Falls from a friend, who also shares an alignment with these ideals, and lives her life in a way to support nature worship. Before this i was unaware of the sect which had it’s central group in Portland, Oregon, the Earth Liberation Front. It is well documented and chronicles the crimes committed by them, their symbolic acts of rebellion against logging companies, slaughterhouses, and ski lodge. Apparently they are labeled as “terrorists” by the FBI, which is quite unintelligent on their part.

Daniel McGowan was one of few members who also partook in the several arsons and protests. There are some interviews with him and history of why he came to possess such a stance. Together they were a secret community with no hierarchy. There are many philosophical questions that arise, and get you to think of the relevancy of the acts. While Daniel is on house arrest, he contemplates the idea of using a compromise to lessen his prison sentence. But one of their original members had already started to turn on them, which leads to the corrosion of the project. He awaits release in 2014. Some compelling archival footage of the fires and street raids/violence are collected. It shouldn’t be seen as some kind of hippie movement though, it revolves around more opposition than anything. Like the animal liberation front, just about anyone can suppose themselves with support of Earth Liberation Front, if one can learn to live more by the laws of nature instead of against it. Whenever you go wander the woods with music pulsing through your headphones, or take a travel into the still pure areas of untained, arcane landscapes. Think of the ancient history that each tree possesses, and it’s important to not only the life of the wolves, deer, and birds but yours also. And don’t throw your fucking trash out there either.

“At another time, the honorable thing or the right thing to do might be to be a policeman or to be President. Right now, I think the honorable thing to do is to be a criminal.”

I fully support the ELF, the ALF and all acts of sabotage used in the name of liberation. While it is important that there are above-ground activists and people working within the system towards legislation, there is also a need for a strong underground.

I watched the documentary and I feel bad for anyone who turns away from watching it because the writer of this review glamorizes ELF (instead the documentary gives a very even handed cover of the matter). Also, it should be noted that arson certainly goes above and beyond a “symbolic” act. I fully support the goals/the ends of those in ELF, but I can not support the means they used. I further don’t think they should receive the harsher prison sentence that comes with being classified in the justice system as “Terrorist”, but they certainly were criminals.
