This is a compilation of Doom’s demos from 1987 to 1992, originally released by Vinyl Japan in 1992 and now reissued by London based Anti Society Records with an updated booklet and new introduction written by Stick from the band.
Doom – Dropout
Personally this CD brings back lots of memories of the late eighties and early nineties where they were interviewed or mentioned in every second fanzine that was out there. In the late eighties friends of mine went to England squatting. They went as young spotty faced Crass/Conflict loving punks, but came back even more grimey and spotty than ever, along with lots of matted hair and stick ‘n’ poke tattoos. And of course came back with all the latest underground music from England too. The Doom album “War Crimes (Inhuman Beings)” being a firm favourite. I was hooked; hook-line-and-sinker with that album. Real straight a head no messing riffs; Black Sabbath meets Discharge.
Some time later I was moving to a big city and had sent Stick from the band a quid and an S.A.E for a demo of his new band at the time Excrement Of War. On the other side of the tape he recorded Doom’s new demo (demo 4) which is on this compilation too. Their sound changed, slightly less gruff vocals and really high quality recording, but still had that real dirty heavy sound. That tape was one of the few tapes I’d brought with me when I moved. The song ‘dropout’ on that said it all to me at the time, I fucking hated everything in that city and eventually dropped out and hitched around the UK for some time. Life changing experience with that song being part of the soundtrack. They re-recorded quite a different version of that song a few years later on ‘The Greatest Invention’.
But back to the album, all the demo versions of Doom’s finest here from Police Bastard, Exploitation, Relief etc. Also comes with a nice wee booklet of old photos, lyrics and an old interview with them from issue 1 of ‘Gnarlimost’ zine. Mero from Antisociety Records does great research on all the re-releases and adds in lots of old zine interviews and flyers with each release. Other releases they have done are all official releases by Anti System, Anti-Sect, Pink Turds In Space and Zounds. Doom are of course still just as powerful today. And are back together touring with old guitarist Denis now singing.
