Death Of This Dry Season…BRAINOIL Review

Maybe I should roll one up & light it up before I get into this review…on second thought, I will wait until after. The fumes from this record can alter my mind without inhaling the sticky green goodness. Damn, Oaktown’s BRAINOIL is back with a heavy new album called Death Of This Dry Season, which will be released via 20 Buckspin on Aug. 2nd. I just got to say that I have been digging this band for a really long time, so when I heard they were coming out with new music, I cleaned up my bong & stocked up on some kind bud for the occasion. For about a week I have been smoking BRAINOIL nightly, & they have been taking me on some radical mind-bending journeys. Death Of This Dry Season is pure Apocalyptic Blues; this record drips with the grit of the urban environment were this band comes from, but by the same token it has this mystical layer that acts as the magic carpet ride that allows your thoughts to travel. The songs on this record sound like they have been blessed by a witchdoctor who put the band under his new spell called “crust blues of the underworld”. Okay, I will break down for you like this – BRAINOIL kills shit with their own sick brand of blues-infected sludge crust that gets all in your bloodstream, & in my case makes me think about all kinds of random rad shit like the great viking battles of old. The riffs on this album are filthy & have this swing to them that is just catchy as fuck but then at the drop off a dime the band’s riffs become filled with dirty sludge. BRAINOIL’s music packs a crusty punk punch to it that can get you amped up, but they also punish you the with this huge wall of doom. In my mind, every song on this record is covered in a layer of stench, with another layer of blackened melody on top. The vocals on Death Of This Dry Season are whiskey-soaked & spit out with a dark sense of danger – do not come up in the singer’s face talking shit, because you will get got. Fuck picking a couple songs to say how rad this album is, the whole damn thing rocks from the first track to the last. Where is my stash…now it’s time to smoke my BRAINOIL…I just got a brand new bong called Death Of This Dry Season!

I really dig this review of “Death of this dry season”. Nice that the classic “Brainoil” was not mentioned. Stand alone CD.
