The Thing

A film that fails on every level that John Carpenter’s 1982 masterpiece succeeded, The Thing is devoid of chills, atmosphere, and a well paced plot.  Enjoyable due to its high production values, this “prequel” does take loving care when getting the details set in stone by its predecessor.  There is very little enjoyment here outside of your standard creature feature.

Hobo with a Shotgun

Rivers of gore flow through almost every scene in the schlocky, grindhouse throwback.  A pulsating commentary on the rising power of the wealthy and the diminished strength of the working man, Hobo with a Shotgun delivers its feelings with feral bravado.  Shouldered on the back of a brooding performance by Rutger Hauer, this film surprised me and was enjoyable from start to finish.

I Saw the Devil

This South Korean gem is a hyper violent exposition on the humane and inhumane sides of revenge.  A ruthlessly savage killer meets his match in the methodical and vengeful lover of a recent victim.  I Saw the Devil is a jarring game of cat and mouse that is unapologetic in its content, graphically and emotionally.

Scream 4

The film series that revived horror’s smart side in the 90’s returns with its entertaining fourth entry.  The three series leads (Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette) resume their rolls as a new killing spree begins against the backdrop of 2000’s horror film cliches.   While not the best in the series, Scream 4 is a successful slasher to say the least.

Paranormal Activity 3

I hated the first Paranormal Activity and even after repeat viewings, I still didn’t like it.  The first sequel was entertaining but this third installment is by far the best yet.  Combining the few good chills of the original with some genuine charm, Paranormal Activity 3 truly shines in the nail biting finale.

Troll Hunter

Some of the most fun I’ve had watching a movie, Troll Hunter is a “lost footage” film that deftly combines humor, tension, and Norwegian folklore.  Blessed with breathtaking scenery and convincing special effects, Troll Hunter brings the tongue in cheek nature of its subject matter to life.  While its narrative my suffer at times, Troll Hunter more than makes up for it with sheer entertainment.

    I Saw The Devil.
Excellent movie, alittle hard to sit through some scenes. However, I gather that was the point. The story, and characters are very well done, as is the cinematography. I don’t know that I would call it a conventional ‘horror’ movie. I found it emotionally moving in certain ways. I would recommend it for sure !

I walked out of The Thing, it was that bad. Absolutely love Troll Hunter and Hobo with a Shotgun. Haven’t seen the others.
