I have many memories of growing up in the early 80’s SoCal punk scene, and a lot of them are about all of the strong women that were around! Some of them were younger than me, but I must say it was the older ones who really stood out to me, ie: Tex from Tex and the Horseheads, Exene from X and Alice from Alice and the Bags/Castration Squad. It was cool back then, because from my point of view, race and gender were not things that held us apart. I remember one night watching Alice and the Bags rock shit at the Music Machine on Pico. I thought to myself, this band is really fucking awesome, and I never said to myself, she was a killer latina singer, because in my book, none of that mattered, she was just plain radical!
