CVLT Nation Label Series
Southern Lord Mixtape

Now this could break your neck: our comrade in heavy, Southern Lord, has curated an edition of our label mixtape series. What you have is 20 songs that will make you realize why this label is on some next level shit and it’s packed full of some extra heavy gems! The Southern Lord tour kicks off today in Seattle featuring Black Breath, Martyrdöd, Burning Love, and Enabler. The SoCal horde has it good, because our stop on the tour is a free Southern Lord/Scion Showcase (click to RSVP) happening this Saturday in Pomona…peep all of the tour posters after the jump! Read what the Lord himself has to say about this comp, and stream and download below!

2012 has been been an incredible year for us so far. We have had the amazing opportunity to work some great bands. Although its only half way through the year, I’m going to say that this is probably the best year in the entire existence of the label! From legends like Sleep, Poison Idea, High on Fire, From Ashes Rise, Pelican and Earth, to up-and-coming bloodthirsty butchers: Black Breath, Martyrdod, Burning Love and Enabler. Speaking of which…I personally booked an entire US tour myself of those 4 bands, that kicks off on June 19th in Seattle.

Why in the hell would I be crazy enough to do that? I felt it was absolutely crucial for these bands to be seen, so I took matters into my own hands. Along the way, those 4 bands encounter other Southern Lord alumni like: Poison Idea, Noothgrush, Pelican, 2 new bands from Texas were working with – Power Trip and Wild//Tribe – Dead In The Dirt, and on the East Coast, The Secret from Italy join in on the madness. This is similar to how trading forex works such as forex trading from Australia from Australian forex trading websites or forex online trading from usa work.

The first half of this comp. is bands from the tour, and the second half are choice cuts from other recent Southern Lord releases. CRANK IT UP!

As I previously mentioned, with all due respect to the bands and labels in the scene (many of whom I consider friends) this Scion shit sucks. I won’t harp on auto related pollution since everyone knows about that, but one of many other concerns I have is that Scion has deep enough pockets to overwhelm some of the sub-genres they “support”, and make it so that one day bands that do not want to be affiliated with auto manufacturers will be locked out. This is different to me than the anti-major label DIY movement or the anti-corporate movement because Scion is trying to co-opt very particular sub-genres as part of its “guerilla” “targeted marketing” campaigns. My critique is specific to Scion’s activity so don’t take it as some purist bullshit. I have some particular misgivings and concerns here. I also re-iterate that I am not attacking or criticizing anyone personally or want to start any boycott’s of bands or create any divisions within the music scene. I just want to state my opinion in the interest of having an open dialog with the hope that some people may reflect on their relationship or lack thereof with Scion. Thanks.

Yeah, corporate involvement in the punk/hardcore/metal scene is pretty lame. It makes me wonder what labels and bands would do if McDonalds started handing out free shows and record contracts. It’s pretty much the same thing isn’t it? Toyota funds intense slave labor, and has been called out by the global community on several occasions for being a sketchy company. The scene isn’t taking advantage of Scion by using their money to fund their “DIY” labels, it is taking the bait. We’re allowing ourselves to become a future product of a corporate entity.

Steve makes a good point. What happens to all the REAL DIY labels and bands, the ones who refuse to be bought out? When the standard for a DIY label is elevated to corporate sponsorship how are those small labels supposed the maintain funding to release material when their competitors could essentially just buy out anyone?

I hear you. I guess I just hope that people will continue to be supportive to the grassroots in spite of the occasional corporate event. All I’m trying to say is that I hope that as long as labels like Moshpit Tragedy continue their existing business model, which is anti-capitalist (in the American sense at least) in my opinion, that they continue to garner support from the community. It’s really hard to be creative for a living, and you do need to support yourself. If a Scion event can expand MT’s audience, and by extension send more people to their site to donate for the music they provide and keep them in business, I for one am willing to forgive them.

Almost everything that has been released from Southern Lord in the past two years is in my collection. Love this label and the poeple behind it. So many good bands in their collection and releases to come. Cant wait!
