CVLT Nation’s Top 6
Black Metal
Albums Of 2011

If you have not been living under a rock lately, or you spend all your time being diurnal and never know the secrets ov the dark. I’ve taken the hostile task to make a compilation of the top 6 black metal albums in the years of christ’s death 2011. There is always a subjective indifference for everyone of what qualifies to be given this right. To me, it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks as everyone will have different tastes. But as so far as I’m the writer, these are the noteworthy 6 albums that I would hoard in a cave with only a stereo (if I ever had to), keeping safeguard over them.

I: Sortilegia Pestilent Black Sorcery… The essence of nothingness incarnate. I am left alone in empty space amidst the dark matter of the universe. My consciousness yet remains intact and I return with spectral experience even too eerie for any pen to write. Who would have thought an alchemy of mysterious and private worship could be forged so perfectly in city of drugs, media and industrialization. It is not so long that you can re enter the journey over and over and return with something different every time.

II:Forteresse Crepuscule d’Octobre… Patriotic Quebecois Noir metal of the finest ilk. The 3 gentlemen of Forteresse know how to weave the history of their noble history into sombre renditions of bleak landscapes, and triumphant passageways to French nationalism in the current age. Not afraid to bring into their chime a healthy blend of original folk instruments, added just a touch of what once was. Your astral body will take a long journey into realms only realized by history books, especially if your are French and can relate, like myself. Forteresse channels together an organic dose of minimalistic black ambient, plants it in the ground and lets it become a grandiose monument to stand through time.

III:Djevel-Dodssanger… Traditionalism is the key to the Djevel’s secret recipe of black metal. Whatever he had been cooking was finally served. A regeneration of the classics that have left their fossilized imprint on the northern rocks of Norge. Sticking their head above the sediment to show there is primitive life to be studied. Casting the form of elder native tongue, into a formulated slab of fuzzed out devil worship. This is the latter project of T. Ciekals who also fronted Lja before disbanding, and taking stride with comrade Erlend Hjelvik ov Kvelertak. This will have your adrenaline flowing past the normal anxiety point, and lead you on paths of nostalgia through old growth forests & coasting along icy fjords.

IV: Aosoth-III… If field recordings were taken of the most devastating of natures disasters and captured onto tape then, accidentally mixed into one layer, it would come tantalizingly close to resembling III, Aosoth’s most viscous and dangerous output. Past attempts have given vent to a harsh orthodox brand of black metal, while seemingly experimenting on this one, one would ask where this extra energy comes from. Certainly not thrash or death metal, but the echoed and suffocating waves of sound keep you held in tight bondage, then throw you out of control far from your comfort level. The screams are not those of a heavyset guy with black gauntlets in a cozy recording studio but the horrendous chants of a victim trying to escape the madness he became stuck in, struggling for survival. This is the epitome of the doom that cometh of epic proportions, and posting no signs of warning.

V: Archgoat-Heavenly Vulva… Perhaps the most blasphemous incantation to ever be invoked upon a once less threatening earth. Archgoat takes all satanic paradoxes and crush them with an iron hoof. These furious barbarians split up in the early 90′s because people just didn’t seem to get it. But evolution has taken place in the underworld of bestial hatecraft and Archgoat felt the impulse to trample once more. Lord Angelslayer literally must have been scientifically mated with a goat in his young without his parents telling him or he was feral from birth and never learned human speech properly. What gargles out from his horrid mouth is not unlike those horned mountain dwellers. The unrelenting sexual perversion of Heavenly Vulva will give you lasting lucid visions of berserker warfare, bestiality, and leprosy of your very own body. Penetrating the planets molten core with super density riffing and the deep pulsating hammers of drums signalling the breaking apart of our world.

VI: Castrum Doloris-I Shall Become… Undulating from deep within the dusty reliquary caverns of Norway, this was a short lived act, and the members were anonymous. They came into existence only long enough to cast forth an ancient, castle-like atmospheric totem. Sounding as if it was stolen recordings from the very room of where a catafalque would be held, filling the void of empty space with a fogged up density on unearthed white noise. This relic was begotten upon the finest label I know of, Terratur Possessions. Steeped in mysticism, and brooding hymns of funereal transcendence.

That Sortilegia album is fucking insane! I’ll make sure to check out Castrum Doloris if it sounds anything like what you describe.

Thanks for the words, I would suppose you have a fondness for raw black metal? Sortilegia are friends of mine in Toronto. I would also check out some of the other bands released on Terratur if you are a freak like me. (Dodsengel, Liturgia, Mare, Kaosritual)
