Demo Of The Month
CHILD BRIDES
Review + Stream

Stemming creative minds from both Los Angeles,CA and Nashville, TN, Child Brides is spewing out globs of avant garde industrial doom in their debut Self Titled tape. Spin off of LA drone violence band Low Places, Child Brides carries the noise element of that band to new places incorporating very simplified rhythmic beats, noisier hard-clipping overdriven guitar, some electronic synth, and strained distorted vocals compiled onto minimalistic song structures. Different from Child Brides’ earlier release Misfortune & Eternal Darkness, this release has removed the echoey spacious recording style and replaced that with a low-fi gritty digital clipping style which makes the songs feel much closer and abrasive.

The tape begins with Elite Downpour, a driving simple beat with hissing guitars. The vocals kick in yearning out line after in audible line until the beat picks up to a rocking tempo. This eventually drops off into feedback and yells. The next song Chained follows the same format but has a more contemplative pace and vocal style. The guitar seem more somber and less droning. This is a carry over from their previous release which highlights the change in recording style, showing the added intensity of the low-fi recording. Up next comes There Was Nothing which blasts out of the gates with rapidly pounding drums, soaring guitars and barking vocals. This fades into the centerpiece of the release False Option. This song departs from the other songs stylistically because it is essentially an electronica song. The drum beat is danceable, the guitar/synth fill the recording with ambiance and airiness. For the first time on the release a bass line appears driving home the dance aspect of the song. It reminds me of a witch haus song with black metal vocals over it. Up next comes Prisoner of the White Lord which is a noise dirge with slow pounding tribal drums, feedbacking guitars and ape howling vocals in vein of post punk industrial bands like Swans. What follows is Hated, two and half minutes of pianos and drums playing a anxious groove over a sample of a man talking about suicide and freedom. Finally the release ends with Pleasure & Pain which much like Prisoner of the White Lord has simple pounding drums and droning guitar, but the vocals on this one have a more haunted tinge.  In this song the vocalist is talking to you as opposed to howling out into the night. Calling out to you in a witch like voice.

Child BridesSelf Titled cassette is by some of the most out-there experimental music I’ve listened to in a while and it should not be missed out on. Child Brides’ release can be pre-ordered at their webstore and can be streamed on the web at their Bandcamp.
