One of the most important musical movements to take place in the early to mid 90’s was the RIOT grrrl movement that started in Washington D.C and flourished on the Northwest. The other day, I got the chance to watch one of the most moving documentaries about this scene that I have ever seen, Don’t Need You- The Herstory of Riot Grrrl. The whole time I was watching it, I had chills, and I wished that everyone had a chance to see this film – that’s how good it is. What struck me about this film was that it was made by women, which is cool, because too many times the story of a movement is told by those who did not live it. The interviews in this film are moving as fuck, and will keep your attention for sure. I also dig the way that Don’t Need You shed light on the isms that existed within the scenes as well. You don’t have to be a fan of any of these bands to dig this movie, all you have to do is to be a fan of humanity, ie: real punk rock! On a personal note, I’m a father of two daughters, and this will be a documentary that both of them will be watching for sure. Take some time out of your day and peep Don’t Need You- The Herstory of Riot Grrrl! So after the jump, see what this riot was all about!
