Aokigahara Forest of Death

In Japan there is a forest at the base of Mount Fuji filled with numerous suicide victims. It is the desired place for Japanese people to go and either contemplate or kill themselves and the second in the world. It’s called the Aokigahara forest or Jukai meaning Sea of Tree. It started spiralling out of control when a book was published wherein one of the main characters commited suicide in the forest. Now there are reported about 50-100 deaths here per year. The site holds so many bodies that the Yakuza pays homeless people to sneak into the forest and rob the corpses. The vice crew went out to film the forest with a guide and are given some in depth history to the location and why people choose this place. It is also an interesting look at suicide from a psychological standpoint. The Japanese man who is followed gives an enlightening speech about Japanese culture. He also finds a man in a tent who was probably thinking about ending it, talks with him, and eventually is taken out. There is some real footage of human skeletal remains, and photos of people hanging from the tree branches. There are signs in the woods urging people to rethink about living their life. Japan seems to have quite a problem with this, as there is also suicide cults on the internet, where people meet to die together and go into extreme detail of how they would love to do it. A book was also published detailing the physiological, and mental effects of different kinds of suicide.

Hey, I thought I’d comment as I recently visited Aokigahara forest and spent 6 hours exploring it with two friends and three cameras. I compiled most of the video footage + photos along with bits and pieces from my journal to construct the story of my experience there. Please check it out and let me know what you think!
