Afterlife…AMENRA Review + More

Have you ever heard music that made you feel good to be alive? Have you ever heard music that made your grey daze make sense? Have you ever heard music that spoke to the feelings that you did not want to acknowledge? Well I have, & the band that comes to mind is Belgium’s AMENRA. They recently inked a deal with brothers in arms Neurot Recordings, which will release their next album entitled Mass V. Today I would like to take the chance to talk about their 2009 EP Afterlife, which is sonic healing at it’s best! If I had to label this band I would call them heavy blackened soul with the power to illuminate the universe through sound. AMENRA’s songs put this imaginary mirror up to your thoughts so that you can figure out where you fit in this thing called life. Their songs are full of movement, but at the same time are vast, which allows your nightmares the space to transform themselves into dreams. They give heavy a brand new meaning – AMENRA uses non-traditional methods to create their mammoth sounds, where backwards loops collide with whispers & seep slowly into your thought pattern. They also have long, drawn out melodic parts that morph into sound effects that will suck you into a black hole of sunshine. On songs like “Wear My Crown,” the guitarist plays these notes that will resonate deep down into your bones, & the vocalist sings directly to you. The song “To Go On and Live With Out” creeps up on all of my insecurities & paints them with light, so now I will conquer them & they will not destroy me. What amazes me about AMENRA is that their music is not retro by any means, but there is something ancient about the audio soundcapes that they build. This is the kind of music I want to hear after this fucked up society has tried to break me down, because AMENRA has the force to rebuild. Now I know what I need in my life: an AMENRA gig with a big spliff, with my wife, daughters & I all spacing out to this outergalactic band. After the jump, check out this killer performance by AMENRA from the inside of a cave.
