Steven Wilson, aka Black Uroborus, is a New York illustrator who has done graphics for the likes of Masakari, Tree of Sores, and our blogger friends over at Lurker. In his own words, he depicts the symbiosis of “metal, mythology, Lovecraftian themes, nature and spiritual decay” in his imagery – and I think this is a succinct description for such depth of work. Each piece gives a sense of intense layers of meaning, from pain and death to humanity’s inexorable connection to our place in Nature’s cycles. His work is highly textural and detailed; many of his pieces feature subjects that appear to be trapped by tree roots, worm-like creatures or even their own blood vessels. In Wilson’s works, we are literally tied to Nature, even while we feed off of it. This is not the blood-and-gore type of metal imagery, but it has a blackness about it that both threatens and warns. Wilson is also working with Heinali and Matt Finney, who composed the music for Olia Pishchanska’s recent exhibition I blogged about, Dreamcatcher. It is a small, dark and dreamy world we live in. Black Ouroborus’s work has always been very liked by me. It’s deep rich colors and meticulous lines are rendered with the utmost care and strategy. I wish him the best of luck in his endeavors and I look forward to more of his artwork on alternative LP albums. Rock On B.U.!!
