Is possible for one human to have four different musical projects, and all of them are fucking stellar? Well, this is just the case with Patrick Hasson – this Portland, Maine, native is the mastermind of some my favorite bands that span five or more different genres. Let’s get the ball rolling by naming the different projects: Black Chalice (Doom, Death Metal), Avulse (Punk, D-Beat, Black Metal), Auspicium (NoirGaze) and Field of Spears (Neo-Folk). Each of these projects cross-pollinate with one another in a very organic way. Meaning, when you hear Avulse, it will slap you in the lips with it’s charred grooves, but don’t be surprised when it rains down some noirgaze on to your dome! Same goes for Black Chalice, the new record, Submission, is pretty much perfect. This album is heavy as fuck, but it still has huge castle walls of emotion that we all get to climb with each listen. The song “Regret” is a 9 minute audio trek that paints humanity with a brush of doom, but at same time it still lets the sun shine through. When you listen to Patrick’s music, you almost feel like each project is allowing you to view another part of his mind, and music is his way of communicating with the outside world. What words come to mind when hearing his Auspicium project? Majestic & Ethereal; it leaves my thoughts floating in space before coming back down to earth on the wings of time.
