Young & In the Way, Weekend Nachos, Full of Hell and Iron Flag at the Milestone Club Charlotte NC 1-23-12.

The Milestone filled up pretty fast for a rainy Monday night. By the time the Charlotte locals Iron Flag went on, it seemed like over 100 people had shown up. The 5 piece played an energetic set of metalcore with more of a hardcore punk focus. I’m not sure how many people in the crowd were familiar with their music because they weren’t too active, but it seemed like most were enjoying it since they all stuck around. To my surprise and probably many others, Weekend Nachos began setting up next. The crowd all packed in for some sludged out power violence. Weekend Nachos played a lot of tracks from “Worthless” and “Unforgivable,” along with a couple from “Punish & Destroy”. The entire crowd was into their set and were constantly stage diving and screaming into the mic when they had a chance. Highlights for me were definitely “Black Earth” and “Pain Over Acceptance”.

Full of Hell set up next and played one of the most genuinely angry sets I have ever seen. The vocalist began with a mind searing intro of harsh noise. He rocked back in forth, seething with energy while the noise built tension. It was fun to see the reactions of some people in the crowd that were obviously not experienced with noise music. When the whole band joined the cacophony, the crowd started getting into it more. Their blend of vitriolic hardcore was along the lines of power violence, combined with sludge at times and harsh noise. Definitely a band to watch.

Young & In the Way prepared for their live ritual with dimmed lights, incense and candles. The sonic assault of blackened crust began, and soon there were stage divers flying through the dark with reckless abandon. YAITW played mainly from “I Am Not What I Am” and the “Eternal Depression” EP. Kable, the vocalist, stood on an old tree stump that was hauled to the front of the stage. He hung from the rafters and dove into the crowd. Eventually a fight broke out but they kept playing. It’s been awesome seeing this band rise to power not just in Charlotte, but the whole east coast. Go support all these bands if they make it to your town and enjoy the photos.
