Young And In The Way are a four piece blackened crust/sludge/hardcore punk band from North Carolina. Their previous releases includes Newborn (2008), Amen (2010), Cloven Hoof (2010), and now I Am Not What I Am (2011). I bet you’re thinking “Oh cool! These guys sound like Wolvhammer.” but that is not the case. YAITW seem to capture a more realistic feel when it comes to crust not only being a DIY band but displaying all the elements that helped pioneer the genre such as hardcore, thrash metal, and even borderline black metal. The style of sludge is pretty fucking filthy with lots and lots more down-tempo, heavily distortion on both bass and guitar, and skull-crushing riffs. Hell, they even sampled composer György Ligeti‘s piece Requiem in the intro track. The bands that come across my mind when mentioning these guys would be something along the lines of Trap Them, All Pigs Must Die, or Nails meets the Elitist, the grindcore/sludge band from Portland, OR. Now that I Am Not What I Am has dropped, it seems like Young And In The Way are FINALLY getting the credit they deserve.
