Wolvserpent – Aporia:Kāla:Ananta + Stream

Wolvserpent tread the path of darkness throughout the epic notations of Aporia:Kāla:Ananta, a single track spanning forty minutes of lush violin, doomed elegance and shadowed passages. Brittany McConnell and Blake K. Green recorded the work after the release of Perigaea Antahkarana in 2013, although seemingly it was written long before the duo made themselves known in 2010 with the stunning debut Blood Seed. They’re a band that benefit from taking their sweet time, and Aporia:Kāla:Ananta moves in distinctly slow progressions while building atmosphere and presence in moments of desolation.

Aporia:Kāla:Ananta

Silence plays a large part in the Wolvserpent palette and the occasional breath is taken to allow the music to seep under the skin and feed into the subconscious. Beginning on gorgeous strings, Aporia:Kāla:Ananta leans towards elegant ambiance before moving forward into more destructive forces and Green’s deep register. His voice takes a marginal step back from the music this time around and instead Wolvserpent build towers of sound to create the idea of cyclical movement.

Huge washes of all-encompassing sound are layered delicately over each other so that Aporia:Kāla:Ananta is constantly pulsing with an ethereal life-force. Emotionally heaving, the EP pushes for the outer reaches of the universe during its weighty and gloomy expanse. It flows smoothly and deliberately, despite the rumbling current that peeks out from the hazy curtain of droning guitar, threatening to drive the track into far headier territory than is necessary. Instead, Aporia:Kāla:Ananta shows restraint, and the song dives down into melancholy and onto soothing breaks of ocean waves that signal finality.

Wolvserpent have created another haunting composition that speaks of life and death, and with Aporia:Kāla:Ananta they have a work that is beautiful and affecting. The otherworldly aura is established in the dreamlike structures of the dawn of the track and in the final throes and its nature inspired evolution. Aporia:Kāla:Ananta sets Wolvserpent apart from their peers in it’s honesty and concept and they are sure to expand and progress ever further in the future.
