The UT Connewitz in Leipzig is an impressive location in itself: a former cinema, its high ceiling and majestic, albeit slightly decrepit, architecture provide an excellent and appropriate setting for any band of the darker ilk. On June 5th, this amazing venue was host to the mighty Wolves in the Throne Room.
They were supported by the criminally underrated Harvey Milk (a kind of odd but excellent choice as far as I’m concerned), who appeared to be in a great mood and almost literally brought down the ceiling with their doomy weirdness and relentless riffing despite a somewhat lukewarm reception by most of the blackmetalheads in attendance. Do yourself a favour and go see these guys live as soon as you can if you haven’t yet!
And then the banners were pulled up, the oil lamps brought out and Wolves in the Throne Room descended upon the audience in almost complete darkness and excessive amounts of fog. I apologize for the lack of decent pics, but at some point I just gave up and let the music and the fog wash over me. The guys played an amazing, but relatively short set and made an abrupt exit – the venue made it quite clear that no encores were to be expected by blasting Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne” at full volume at a bewildered audience immediately after the band had left the stage.
Anyway, put on some Harvey Milk, Wolves in the Throne Room or Leo Cohen, get high (or don’t; it’s your loss, really) and enjoy the gallery!
