First coming to my attention via the band Airs (whom Vessel I were down to do a split with – although this may not actually be happening now), this band encompass the raw elements of black metal whilst trying to bring something new to the table. Low-fi production mixes with the more atmospheric end of the spectrum to create a somewhat disjointed sound.
Finality is the lead track, nigh on ten minutes of pure aural dissonance which doesn’t let up for the running time, or for the nearly thirty minute play time of the demo. With the atmospheric black metal genre saturated with a multitude of bands doing more or the less the same thing, Vessel I are sticking to the truer side of life. Dirty production, screamed vocals, hardly any bass and a passionate belief for their subject matter.
This demo contains three tracks showcasing what the band are capable of, although newer material leans a little more to the atmospheric (perhaps even bordering on that “post” tag that’s been floating around) side and in the video below a more recent song can be heard. It’s the sound of a band finding their way in the world. A world full of hate and misanthropy. A world in which Vessel I fit quite comfortably. If total disgust is something that makes you comfortable that is. And why wouldn’t it?
Closing with From Dust To Astral Void: jarring guitars, blastbeats and some intriguing interludes leave you wanting more. You can hear the direction they want to take, some passages are a little trippy in places and you know that this band can only get more experimental with time. Vocals are kept low in the brief moments they appear in a track driven by soundscapes and feeling. Hate drives us and it drives Vessel I.
