Tucson
Carissa’s Weird
7″ Review

I love music that’s sad at it’s core and uplifting at it’s roots. I love music that is a mirror into my soul and makes me believe in myself, even when all I can see is darkness. One band has brought tidal waves of bleak joy into my life: Seattle’s Carissa’s Weird. They broke up around 7 or 8 years ago, and I thought I would never hear new music from them again. But late last year they released a two song 7″ on Sub Pop entitled Tucson that sounds majestic as ever. The guitar playing that kicks off the title track sounds like a gentle wind blowing my dreams into a different sphere of reality. Then there are Matt and Jen’s vocals; when these two humans sing together, you can feel their pain overlapping to create a sense of melancholic harmony. On “Tucson,” a brand new form of soul was manifested. The thing that truly makes this band so fucking special is that they are all friends that would ride or die for each other. The band members conjure a wide open space of trust where all of their ideas have room to grow. On “Meredith & Iris,” Carissa’s Weird will take your spirit on an enchanted journey. This band shows that quiet might be the brand new loud, because in their moments of silence you will hear power. Listening to this 7″ got me thinking about how much that I had missed this band, and how happy I am that they are back. I only wish that they keep putting out new music, because the world is a sadder place without them. After the jump, check out some of their moving live footage.
