The Unsettling Works of So PineNut

So PineNut is a Japanese visual artist whose lines conjure darkness and discomfort in a way that puts a lot of guts and gore metal illustrations to shame. His subject matter may not be satanic, nor does it feature your typical anti-establishment themes, but it cuts to your core with its almost oppressive presence on the page. You can feel the hands grasping, smell the earth and decay, taste the blood as it oozes from an open wound. Nature is prominent in So PineNut’s works, as is a carnivorous and sometimes cannibalistic view of human beings, and even the Bible makes an appearance with its simplified view of man and animal and its penchant for war and judgement. These artworks make me reflect on the human species, seeing us as ravenous, pillaging the land and its creatures for our own benefit, and in the process raping our own existence.
