The Outsider Art of Adolf Wölfli

Hello there freaks, been a long time since last time I posted shit here. So here we go again, lets talk about something freaky and weird – well in the sense of art. If you never heard of Adolf Wölfli (February 29, 1864 – November 6, 1930), he was one of the first artists to be associated with Outsider Art / Art Brut. His artworks were created at a mental asylum near Bern – Switzerland, where he spent rest of his life. He was sexually and physically abused as a child, his father also was a criminal and alcoholic – maybe thats one of the reason why he grew up as a troubled man. In 1895 he was committed to the Waldau Mental Asylum (and diagnosed as a schizophrenic), after arrested (for the second time) for attempting to molest a 3.5 year old girl.

In this asylum he developed a morbid interest with art, a weird art which later dubbed as Brut Art/Outsider Art. This Swiss artist worked with various mediums, from drawing and collage to music and writing. His works in drawings and collages are often ‘disturbed’, abstract and very details. While his musical compositions can be described as ‘something experimental’, if you ask me. In 1987, an LP entitled “Necropolis, Amphibians & Reptiles: The Music of Adolf Wolfli” was released, it was a collection of musical interpretations by composer/musician Graeme Revell and also experimental artists DDAA (Deficit Des Annees Anterieures) and Nurse With Wound. I have to say, he’s one of my inspirations in drawing alongside with Nick Blinko, Junji Ito and Justin Bartlett. Nuff said, check out his rad works and musical compositions below!
