Mikhell Chernobyl‘s art is heavy – he paints with a thick, viscous black atmosphere, evoking the tarry depths of the underworld. Yet his subjects burst forth from the abyss, their pain in pulsating colors, or glaring, icy whites, contrasting the slow gloom of his backgrounds. He is master of the crusty aesthetic in his illustrations; he captures the youth, chaos and textural cacophony perfectly. But his paintings are simpler, and with a smooth flow of inspiration. The speak to the viewer with a serene beauty, even when they depict fiery hellwinds and apocalyptic murder. Their softness belies their true intentions, which is to terrify and remind us of death’s silence, but also of its’ howls of agony. All of his work reaches out and grasps your eyeballs in their tentacles, threatening to crush them but not allowing you to look away. After the jump, check out what my stoner ramblings are all about…
