Pinkish Black’s cover of New Dawn Fades is incredibly chilling. I favor this track over all the others in this collection partially because I have seen Pinkish Black live and they are exceptionally passionate in their craft, but mostly because it is quite simply a spectacular and chilling rendition. The vocalist completely captures Ian Curtis’ twisted vision. The clever but simplistic instrumentation of the static-like synths and haunting guitar leads add a new layer of atmosphere to the song.. as if taking the original version and re-animating it into a newer, perhaps even darker existence. The original song was morose and despondent, as evident with lyrics like , “A loaded gun won’t set you free.. or so you say.” But it seems like here the morbid reality of those lyrics fully and truly manifest.
Needless to say, it made my hair stand on end. Cheers to Pinkish Black and the other bands who contributed to this session!! I also liked the songs by Masses, Crimson Scarlet, and Sun Splitter. Thanks for compiling and posting this! The morbidly authentic vision and content spawned by Joy Division and Ian Curtis deserve to live on.
