Is that the dead skulls screaming, is that the bones of the dead waking up, is that the blood of fear that we are swimming in, is that the is that the land of forever that will never be, is that Burial Hex & Zola Jesus? Yes, it is their ultra-haunting 2009 split, the kind of music that will paint your brightest day grey in a good way. The Burial Hex side starts off with damaged synths, bleeps that morph ghost laughter before they transform into the noises that keep you up at night. Their are moments when I’m listening to this that I began to think the wind has become an unfriendly spirit out to take over my third eye. If I rolled a tractor down a mountain of glass with wolves howling in the background, that sort of describes some of the sonic textures you will encounter on the Burial Hex side. The Zola Jesus side starts of with tiny sounds that began to grow with each passing second. Whispers are whispers until Zola turns them into sirens of nothingness. Layers of sonic gymnastics take place, then they unfold into her vision of moving sound. Zola blends noise together in way that truly creates a wall of fright. This split is spliff music, so light one up, turn off the lights & zone the fuck out!
