I feel that in this day of information overload, getting to the point is a necessity. With that being said, I was asked for an hour to two hours of music, so I gave right above an hour. Most of the music on here is stuff that I’ve been listening to recently. With that being said I feel that I should mention a few bands here that I love, but were left out of my playlist: As Friends Rust, Cave In, Danzig, Deathspell Omega, Integrity, Jane’s Addiction, Leviathan, Martyrdod, Masshysteri, Mouth of the Architect, Napalm Death, Propagandhi, Satyricon, Sepultura, Wolfbrigade, The Who, etc. This list could go on forever.

Bruce Springsteen “Born to Run” – What, are you too punk to like the fucking boss? Do you not have a heart? Have you never struggled in life? Sure, I don’t really like the song “Born in the USA”, but if you read the lyrics to that song, the meaning is entirely different than what you thought. Why do I say these things? Because I was once a young hardcore kid who had trouble appreciating “other” forms of music. Listen to the section of this song 2:38 – 3:05 and it will change your mind, then go check out every record pre-Born in the USA and prepare to have your mind blown.
Cannibal Corpse “Scourge of Iron” – This is the 2nd song that Corpse has posted from their new record “Torture”. I’ve been a fan since Bloodthirst. I had heard of the band from Ace Ventura (like most other people my age), but it was a little too extreme for me at the age of 9. I had an older friend who took me to buy Bloodthirst the day it came out, and he bought 14 year old Jeff a copy of “Tomb of the Mutilated”. I’ll never forget the car moshing that ensued on the 30 minute drive home, I thought I was going to die! Thanks Nate, wherever you are, for buying me that record. Needless to say, this band has never let me down. They keep getting better. If this song doesn’t make your blood fucking boil, stop listening to my band.
Code Orange Kids “I (Foundations Stand Still)” – Cory from Halo of Flies gave me a copy of the “Embrace Me / Erase Me” cassette. I listen to every tape I get in my van, and needless to say most tapes I get are underwhelming. This one however, the tape quality was absolute shit, I could barely tell what was happening, but this band had some kind of youth energy going on that I found refreshing. Then, I downloaded the the high quality mp3s and I was blown away. One of the best new punk bands I’ve heard in a while. This band will do great things.
Deathreat “Victim of the Middle Class Myth” vs. Death Threat “Dead at Birth” – I’m going to use my love of both bands as an analogy of where I’ve stood in the politics of hardcore and punk rock in the 10+ years I’ve been involved. I’ve always felt that hardcore and punk rock were an open forum of discussion, and both sides would do well to just listen to each other once in a while. I grew up in a really small town in Ohio, I had to drive at least 30-45 minutes to see any good show, sometimes more like 2 hours, and I didn’t really care what it was as long as it was hardcore, metal, or punk rock. That kid in me has never left.
Def Leppard “Another Hit and Run” – My love of Def Leppard goes deep. In first grade, my parents took me to see Def Leppard on the “Adrenalize” tour. Later on, I’ve recognized that album to be the beginning of the end of a truly great band, but that album was 7 year old Jeff’s favorite record. About a year later, I was in a soccor league (the only time I was ever in a sports league of any kind), and I wanted to quit halfway through the season. My dad bribed me to stay in with buying me “High and Dry” on cassette at the end of the season (I still own this tape). “Another Hit and Run” is my favorite song on this record, and if you really think Def Leppard just sounds like “Pour Some Sugar on Me”, do some fucking research and find out what this band was really about. Seeing this band at such a young age was life changing for me.
Disincarnate “Stench of Paradise Burning” – This band is one of the best kept secrets of early 90’s Florida death metal. They released one record on Roadrunner in 1993 and that was it. I love most everything James Murphy has done, but this one takes the cake.
Earth Crisis “Filthy Hands to Famished Mouths” – This band has offered so many great things to the world of hardcore. Most vegan straightedge bands of the 90’s talked about politics in such a simple manner, and most of the time, those were the only 2 subjects they wrote about and I bet you money by 2002 most of the people in those bands had sold out at least one or the other if not both. ExC talked about many issues in a manner that was realistic and well educated, and these guys stuck by what they said. To top off their politics, they are an awesome band. Music has always come first with me, and that’s why I listened to this band’s politics. This record “Breed the Killers” is the reason that I first went vegetarian, and has inspired so many riffs that I’ve written over the years. I’m honored to say that Enabler’s drummer is the touring drummer for Earth Crisis.
The Hellacopters “Everything Is On TV” – I can’t believe that this band wasn’t the biggest rock band of the past decade and more. This record “Rock and Roll is Dead” makes the Foo Fighters look like an extremely average band (although I do love Foo Fighters). Nicke Anderson is a songwriting genius. Thank you for 4 amazing Entombed records, a ton of amazing Hellacopters records, and then returning with fucking Death Breath.
Metallica “The Mechanics” – aka The Four Hoursemen aka Mechanix, this is from Metallica’s “No Life til Leather” demo featuring Dave Mustaine on lead guitar. Hearing this made me understand why Mustaine was so pissed off about getting the boot from Metallica. The dude has writing credits for at least 6 songs, and they used his shit anyway. I’ve helped write for a handful of records that I wasn’t on, and I’ve never been credited on any of those albums. Regardless, I’m happy he was booted from Metallica, because it made Metallica better and we got fucking Megadeth. Life just wouldn’t be the same if Mustaine was on “Master of Puppets” and we never got to hear “Rust in Peace”.
Neon Warship “Weather Breeder” – This is a new band from Dayton, Ohio in the vein of The Sword / Thin Lizzy / Black Sabbath. I owe a lot of credit to the vocalist / guitarist to this band Kevin Schindell. A few years back, we tried to start a hardcore band called Kiss the Cobra. We wrote an entire full length with a drum machine and had a demo we made with an 8 track. We were never able to play a show due to his touring commitments with Twelve Tribes and Mouth of the Architect and my touring commitments with Harlots. I had actually moved to Milwaukee when Twelve Tribes was out for about 3 months or so. Most of the songs in Kiss the Cobra have been recycled in one way or another into Enabler songs (Mercenary / No Love No Hope No Fear / Lost Cause / Death Refuge / etc.). Kevin is a great vocalist and songwriter; I highly recommend that everyone reading this go check this band out.
Pearl Jam “Got Some” – A lot of Pearl Jam’s mainstream fans stopped listening after “Vs.” and most punk kids just know “Jeremy” and think that Pearl Jam sucks. I feel like I’m a part of a cult of fans that stuck with them for every record and thinks that they’ve only gotten better. I recommend that you forget about the first 2 records and give “Yield” and “No Code” a listen.
Six Feet Under “The Frayed Ends of Sanity (Metallica)” – Really?!?! Whoever sided with Barnes in the split from Corpse is a moron. So you make a few really boring death metal records, whatever. Then, you make a cover album called Graveyard Classics, ok I get it, covering songs is fun. Then, you do a song with Ice T?!?! I love Body Count, but who actually thinks that Body Count is good, and besides, who does rap/metal post Limp Bizkit? Then, you do Graveyard Classics 2, which is AC/DC’s “Back in Black” covered from start to finish. Seriously, what idiot at Metal Blade thought that it was ok to release an album of Six Feet Under covering “Back in Black”. Even more so, what fucking moron bought this? And then, they decide to do yet another Graveyard Classics. Chris Barnes, all this does is showcase why you were no longer wanted in Cannibal Corpse and how dumb you actually are. (Yes, I just wasted roughly 7 minutes of your life on this pile of shit.)
Slayer “Gemini” – This is the “new” Slayer song off of the punk cover album “Undisputed Attitude”. I absolutely love this record. Slayer covering Minor Threat, awesome. Slayer covering Verbal Abuse, sick. 2 songs that Jeff Hannemen wrote for a punk project in 1985 released for the first time, fuck yes. Getting to hear Paul Bostaph shred drums in Slayer, super fuck yes. The drumming on this song in particular is unreal. My two favorite drumming records of all time are “South of Heaven” and “Divine Intervention”. Lombardo and Bostaph just absolutely kill, but still know how to stay in the pocket.
Trapped Under Ice “Believe” – I hadn’t heard this band until recently. Sometimes I’m really turned off from “new” hardcore bands, just because I think the hardcore bands I liked in the mid to late 90’s were way better (IE Earth Crisis, Strife, VOD, Snapcase, etc) and the hardcore bands of the 80’s (IE Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, etc.) were even better than that. The problem with newer hardcore bands is a lot of times they are just repeating the same formula and not trying to change it up and do their own thing with it. This band is the opposite of that. This shit is ruthless.
Van Halen “China Town” – Van Halen sounds like Van Halen again. Enough said.
