Sorxe Interviews SubRosa

Most inspiring bands growing up?

Michael Jackson was my first love at age 6, followed by Madonna, with Guns N’ Roses taking over at age 12. Some of the most inspiring bands since adulthood are Red Bennies (a band from Provo, Utah influenced by Sleep that served as my gateway drug to sludge and doom), PJ Harvey, and Nine Inch Nails.

What brought on the idea if adding a second violinist?

It, like almost every big change within Subrosa, was a total accident. Sarah went to Europe for eight months with her then-boyfriend in 2009 and Kim was filling in. But after playing with Kim for eight months, I felt bereft at the thought of losing either violinist. Luckily, Kim and Sarah met, clicked on a musical and friend level, and everything worked out great.

How’s the Salt Lake Metal scene?

The Salt Lake metal scene is thriving. We’ve always had a very vibrant scene, with a core of maybe 40-50 heavy bands that play shows regularly and write inspiring original music. Cicadas (Subrosa violinist Kim’s project; heavy, dark, experimental noise violin through four cabs, three heads, and about 10 pedals. It sounds like cattle being crushed under grand pianos dropped from 80 stories), IX Zealot, Moon of Delirium, Visigoth (Metal Blade), Eagle Twin (Southern Lord), Dwellers (Small Stone), Old Timer, INVDRS (Corruption Recordings in Portland), Gaza (now defunct, was on Black Market Activities), Day Hymns and Cult Leader (both with ex-members of Gaza), Huldra, Die Off, Settle Down, Worst Friends, Oxcross and Döne (who Andy also drums for), Light Black, Sure Sign of the Nail, and the list just goes on and on.

Band you’re most excited to see at SWTF?

We’re going two days early to see as much as the festival as we can. I’m really excited to see Ancestors on Thursday night, Demon Lung (because I’ve talked with them over Facebook for a couple years now but never met them), Helms Alee, and Theories (because their drummer also plays with Samothrace and we’re virtual friends). I have seen Kylesa and Red Fang a couple times each before, but look forward to seeing them again, of course. There are tons and tons of bands I don’t recognize and look forward to seeing because I love checking out new bands.

Favorite album of 2013 ?

This is an incredibly tough question. Let me just give you a few that have blown my socks off so far: Integrity’s Suicide Black Snake, True Widow’s Circumambulation, Wolvserpent’s Perigaea Antahkarana, Deafheaven’s Sunbather. I have not listened to the new Kylesa and Cult of Luna yet and need to.

Would you rather be dropped from 150 feet into the middle of rush hour traffic or dropped from 50 feet into the middle of the ocean

50 feet into the middle of the ocean, because at least there is some chance of survival. Tere Jo Dupperault survived being stranded in the middle of the ocean (but she did have a raft).

What’s your preferred weapon for the apocalypse ?

Crossbow, of course.

Paper or plastic?

Paper, paper, paper. Have you ever read The World Without Us?
