Sonic Cathedrals Vol. XLII
Curated by Embers

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. XLII curated by Kelly from EMBERS is going live today! I have so much respect for this band’s intense DIY work ethic, plus they create killer music on top of it! I was super stoked when Kelly said she was down to curate a mixtape for CVLT Nation. The songs that you will experience on this audio journey will expand your mind. CVLT Nation will be working closely with EMBERS as they ready to embark on European tour at the end of May. Turn off the light, burn some candles, blast this mixtape and fly away with your nightmares. Read what Kelly has to say about every track she chose and check out their tour poster after the jump!

A Curse – The Body (USA): The pounding rhythm and serene beckoning of lugubrious drone makes this band a monster of power and grace. Who will glance into the eye of chaos and harness the wailing call of half awakened truths? The Body is raw and captivating. Let the music flow like electricity through the abysmal caverns of a psychotrophic imagination.

A Dream of a Dead Sun – ColdWorld (Germany) is on the top of my list for favorite atmospheric black metal projects. Dreamlike, surreal and yet razor sharp, hauntingly beautiful melodies remind one of the alien world of oceanic depths. Seeping into those dark unexplored recesses of the mind, they wait to be tapped in a moment of blinding inspiration. Punctuated by perfectly timed rhythmic shifts, the swift and swirling current of ColdWorld will take you on a monumentous journey into the enlightenment of the self.

Black Shores – Krohm (Seattle): paints a beautiful portrait of landscapes in motion from the window view of a moving train. Like waking from a dream of half forgotten memories, Khrom will lead you by the hand into shadowy chambers of melancholia. Few come close to the rich complexity of emotion that is conjured during this sonic journey.

Dacia Hiperboreana – Negura Bunget (Romania): Symphonic and mournful this Romanian band feels like a wolf’s journey by moonlight though the still desert night. Beautiful meandering guitar melodies and atmospheric keyboard drones crawl their way with an ominous creeping slowly and deliberately up your spine to whisper tales of woe as you drift into the timeless sleep of death.

Dark 1.6 – Darkspace (Switzerland): Put on your space helmet and prepare yourself to be taken on roller coaster ride through a multidimensional universe of chaos and entropy with Darkspace. This band is an avant-garde style of black metal that will rip your face off with insanely fast rhythms and otherworldly dissonance. Allow yourself to get sucked into this black hole of dark matter and be transported to new spheres of sound.

Disciple’s Libration – Blut Aus Nord (France) is said to be the most experimental of all black metal. Their fearless expansion of the genre has set the music of the spheres spinning on a new axis. These incredibly dissonant and strange melodic rhythms remind me of the nightmarish quality of an H.P. Lovecraft story. This is the warped and textured sound that awakens those arcane and otherworldly powers to dominate and transform.

King of a Stellar War – Rotting Christ (Greece): This band always brings a smile to my face and a skip to my step. The triumphant sound of Rotting Christ vanquishes all. A warrior’s call to arms with absolute certainty of victory. One is helplessly bound to follow their commanding tones much like the Pied Piper even if it leads over the cliff and into oblivion.

Percees de Lumiere – Alcest (France): What glorious music! Alcest is downright uplifting black metal. Their sound is that glimmer of sunlight piercing through the grey on a rainy day, a courageous weed pushing up through the cracks of a broken side walk.. hopeful, serene and yet still containing an edge that reminds one to walk as a warrior in the world. I love it.

Rebirth – Gorgoroth (Norway): Leave no stone unturned from whence come the worms of blackened earth. Menacing and all consuming Gorgoroth claim their right to the throne of beasts with a monolithic sound of drop tuned guitar tones and the machine like pounding of beckoning drums. Pest’s voice sounds like the chewing of a mouth full of gravel stuffed into a cavernous rotting throat. Gorgoroth is visceral and churning like that of stormy ocean waves pounding upon obsidian rock.

Sworn To The Dark – Watain (Sweden): Who doesn’t like a little Swedish satanic black metal with their coffee in the morning? Seen through the prism of putrescent decay, this band will tear and claw its way through you with powerfully malign melodies and rusty saw edged riffs. Even before I saw their incredibly riveting live performance, I felt ferocity of Watain well up like an aneurism of foreboding portent.

The Knell and The World – Dawn (Sweden): The epic crushing power of Dawn, formed in 1990, and has inspired many black metal bands in today’s scene. Captivatingly textured guitar melodies combined with cataclysmic drumming and serrated edged screams slash and burn their way into the very marrow of bone leaving nothing but charred remains. The ferocity of this band is an experience not to be missed.

The Millenium King – Old Man’s Child (Norway): Get ready to take a thrilling ride into pandemonium with OMC formed in 1993. This powerful project has the triumphant energy of a victorious viking battle. This track starts with heads rolling upon blood soaked soil while the blur of blades flash in the sun. Even Hollywood couldn’t produce better battle music than this. OMC is the musical version of ancient bard tales of heroic journeys, battles with mythical beasts and blessings bestowed from Odin himself.

Through Her Silvery Body – Swallow The Sun (Finland): This band is a leviathan of sound. Like Thor’s hammer, Swallow The Sun demolishes all in its path to glory. Plodding and heavy with multi guitar layered harmonies that would make even the God of war weep, this music is incredibly rich and dense. They also put on a live show that leveled the room.

Ukrainian Insurgent Army – Drudkh (Ukraine): Take an enchanted walk through the forest of dreams with Drudkh a folk influenced black metal project. Their somber melodies, mid tempo pounding rhythms and smooth switchbacks of clean and caustic black metal guitar tones create a rich tapestry of sorrow and beauty. This instrumental track is a lovely musical backdrop for creating art, falling into meditation or reflecting with quiet remembrance on days gone by.

You Were But a Ghost in My Arms – Agalloch (Portland, OR): One of my favorite US ambient metal projects, Agalloch takes a successfully integrative approach to black metal and folk music. Their music brings to mind the faces of friends no longer in this world, long solitary walks in the woods at dusk and the ripple of reflective moonlight bright on still waters. Absorb the melancholia of Agalloch and walk away filled with an new appreciation for the mystery and meaning of life.
