1) Old Man Gloom – Gift
There is something so crushing about Old Man Gloom that no band can match. Even the acoustic guitar in this song is heavy.
2) Swans – Stay Here
Is there a better example of industrial sounding sturm and drang? Possibly, but none with the depressive nihilism of Swans. This song alone makes me wish that I was there in 1983 or so to watch them punish their audience.
3) Failure – Saturday Savior
Listening to Cave In should inevitably lead you back to Failure (if you hadn’t already discovered Failure first). This song has such a great build up from verse to chorus and I love the lyrics.
4) Bird of Ill Omen – Spoon
I love songs that have a desparate edge to them, and Spoon from Bird Of Ill Omen seems to deliver in spades. The Bird are criminally underrated, and I always feel more angry when I listen to this. I remember hearing this for the first time and just going absolutely ballistic and still feel moved whenever I hear the song.
5) Horseback – On The Eclipse
A few years back a friend recommended I check out the then-new “Invisible Mountain” record from Horseback. Once I got a copy, I couldn’t stop playing it. It’s still my favorite album of theirs overall, but as a standalone track, I love this song which appeared on a 7inch released by the always excellent Brutal Panda Records.
6) Bloodlet – Cherubim
This is the song that sold me on Bloodlet, hearing the break around two minutes in was one of the first moments that gave me real chills while listening to a song (it still does). I have never looked back since and worship just about anything these guys have done.
7) Deadguy – Pins & Needles
I was 16, and this song was on a comp I bought. From the first note, my definition of music changed. There aren’t many times I can say that in my life, and I still stand by this band.
8) Cave In – Big Riff
Cave In are one of my favorite bands. Jupiter was the first record of theirs I heard and Big Riff was the first song that stuck out to me as being awesome. At over 6 minutes long, it has enough great parts evolving over the course of the song that it never gets boring
9) Pharmakon – Crawling on Bruised Knees
After ignoring this for most of the year, Abandon turned out to be one of my favorite records from 2013. There’s something so hypnotizing and appealing about this record that I keep coming back again and again.
10) Barrit – Crossgates To Disenchangment
Barrit is criminally underrated. There are things going on in this song that I still don’t understand, and I always find new things each time I listen.
11) You & I – Forever Last a Moment
Growing up in NJ, there were few bands that I remember seeing that put more emotion into their live sets than You & I. That emotion drove them to frenzy that they somehow captured on recording. There is a catharsis that you feel every time you play one of these songs, and I still feel like they somehow trapped some lightning in a bottle to do it.
12) Codeine – Wird
Although its probably a pretty cliche thing to say, I listen to a lot of Codeine during the winter. And with the amount of the snow we’ve seen in the Northeast this year, I’ve listened to quite a lot of Codeine this year specifically.
13) Hum – The Pod
I was lucky enough to see Hum in 1998 (or 99?) while they were touring in support of Downward Is Heavenward. They played The Pod, one of my favorite songs from You’d Prefer An Astronaut, and it was an incredible performance. The highlight of their set, in my opinion.
14) Mr Bungle – Pink Cigarette
Mr. Bungle is a band of many musical faces and this song represents just one of those faces. In writing up these descriptions it’s kind of hard for me to put into words just what it is I like about this song so much. I think maybe it’s because for a band so avant garde and off the wall as Mr. Bungle is, they can still pull off a comparatively “normal” sounding song and still make it amazing proving that they can do anything they want.
