I have never been a fan of just one singular style or sub genre of music (or any art) at once. I was lucky to grow up with lots of friends with different takes on heavy music. I was into your 80’s punk/hxc catalog staples young like Minor Threat, Black Flag, DKs, etc. But they introduced me to early PV stuff like His Hero Is Gone, the dread of early Neurosis, and the urgent scrappy-ness of Reversal of Man, amongst countless others. In Nashville, I’d grown up in the shadow of early-era Today Is the Day, and saw that you didn’t have to jump off of stuff to have an incredible and terrifying live impact, just to create terrifying music. They scared the absolute living shit out of me in the best way. Then one band after another in the 90s rocked my brain: Converge, Coalesce, Botch, Dillinger Escape Plan, 400 Years, ad infinitum… seeing these groups melt the entire universe in my friend’s tiny living rooms and basements.

I wish I was able to make a mix of everything I have been listening to for the last many years, there’s just too much. But I am thrilled to be able to share these older songs, each of which either helped shape my playing ability, writing judgement, perception of heavy, or general enjoyment of life. Maybe they will for someone else too.

– Jim, FOT

Helmet was the first band I ever became obsessed with. Strap It On’s “FBLA” is particularly awesome because Stainer gets to go off the whole time, and it includes one my favorite guitar solos ever. John Stainer has easily been the biggest musical influence in my life. In true mixtape fashion, I wanted to tell a story, using songs that focus on deliberate, creative, or athletic drumming, that really exploded my brain over the last several years. Apparently sadness or anguish is also a plus. Enjoy!

I know the Forest of Tygers logo is FOT… but let’s be honest, it reads “FAT” every time.
